DPSubie Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 I went ahead and replaced my head gasket covers today instead of paying the dealership to do it for $180. Parts cost me about $32 at schucks and about 2 hours or so of time. It was a pretty easy process to do and I couldn't have asked for a better day to do it (weather wise). I found an excellent 'how to do' with pics in case anyone else is needing to do this as well. http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51254&highlight=valve+cover And the best part of the day, I think my wheel bearing went out on me on the way to pick up the parts. I'm lookin at about $400 to get that fixed now.
Plays_with_toys Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Valve cover gaskets are way easy. Not to mention they are cheap. Advance Auto has felpro kits for like $25
underpowerd Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 interesting -- what would be the possible symptoms if one of these was bad?
Plays_with_toys Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Oil weeping from somewhere around the valve cover gasket. Generally these don't go bad, but it is a good idea to replace them if the valve covers are removed (like when adjusting valves).
DPSubie Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 What the dealership told me is that it can cause stalling and bogging down of the engine. You can tell they are bad by the noticeable oil when you pull out the spark plug boots. From what I've read around is that it's quite a common problem among the older subies. Not really sure about the newer ones.
underpowerd Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 thanks for the Re's; yes, i think i've read the job requires a bit more on the newer models (ie, gasket maker, maybe a diffrent route to get to them, too) good premised diy, though
Sarra Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Oh god, I don't want to have to pull my wire boots.
Reuben Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Wow, SOHC looks wrong DOHC is a slighty harder job, i got mine done about a month ago. Then the engine blew and i got to take it all apart again. On the plus side, it's MUCH easier to do them when the engines out, and they are still new and re-usable Oh, we call them Rocker cover's in NZ for some reason... lol.
Ollie Ali Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 On the 90-94 Legacys, on the battery side, I don't seem to have enough room to take the cover off when the engine is still in the car. It doesn't clear the rockers. Is there a way to get it out with the engine still in the car?
Bdubs Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 You can get it out with the engine still in. It just needs a little convincing. The harder part is getting it back in without knocking the gasket! Have you taken out the battery and battery tray? That helps you maneuver it more.

Generally these don't go bad, but it is a good idea to replace them if the valve covers are removed (like when adjusting valves). I don't know about that. These things always go bad as the car ages. Subaru's are known for oil leaks. What the dealership told me is that it can cause stalling and bogging down of the engine. bluesuby Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 I never gave valve cover gaskets a thought. What's the replacement like on a 2005 LGT?
Refuge Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 I never gave valve cover gaskets a thought. What's the replacement like on a 2005 LGT? If you find that just PM it to me. I have been looking at doing it for sometime now. I might just create my first posted DIY if one doesnt exist.
Ridgeracer Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I think it starts and ends with you buying liquid gasket maker. The manual calls for one..I think I have a small leak on the passenger side of mines right now.. "Gimme mines Balboa...Gimme mines".....Clubber Lang - Mr. T
Refuge Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I found burnt oil residue on the upper portion on my valve cover. Is this normal?
carnumber19 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I've seen the burnt oil on some older Hondas I've had, but not sure whether its a normal Subaru thing or not.
camroncamera Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 My valve covers looked just about like that. The machine shop cleaned them up nice and shiny when I had them rebuild the heads: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/just-purchased-98-lgt-wagon-coolant-positive-hydrocarbons-151027.html
msigmon Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 What causes intermittentent cylinder misses at 70 miles an hour. changed plugs, coil and wires. car seems to run fine but check engine light flashes going down hill at 70 miles and hour. Does this in both 2.5 Outback and 2.5 Legacy GT.
Osei Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 get the code read first, then try to resolve. O.
