1999 legacy keyless entry programming help

Hello mates, I own a 1999 legacy sedan (us model) which came with a keyless entry as well as locktronics ignition key. Before I lost my keyless transmitters, the car was in valet mode (if that has any relevence.) Also, I am sadly unaware if the car has an alarm system as it has always been in valet mode.

My problem is: I have bought a replacement transmitter from the dealership, and am attempting to reprogram it myself. However, I am unable to successfully do so. I've attempted two separate methods of programming.

1. the method advised in my manual, which asks me to disarm the security system first (citing a picture of an unlocking , open and close the driver side door, turn the key from lock to on 10 times within 15 seconds. This should warrant a honk of my horn to begin the programming.

2. as found on "http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html"

this method is similar, altho it suggests unlocking all the doors, and depressing the break.

So I have been unable to do either of these, and am rather stubborn so would prefer to do it myself (with your help.) I am curious if the locktronics device is somehow related to my inability to complete these simple steps? THank you in advance.

You need to take it out of valet mode and then it should work. U should press the little red button that flashes and that will take it out however i dnt remember how many times u must push it so refer to your owners manual or the security system manual.

As far as I know, I am unable to take it out of Valet mode without a functional transmitter. I will search for a way to do so.

EDIT: I have taken a look at the passive arming p1 connector under the sill cover, and apparently it was set to "passive" mode already. This stamped out my hopes of putting the system into passive mode, so that I could add my new transmitter. Apparently there is no way out of valet mode for me yet.

Since it's a 1999 have you alse checked the http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#code%20alarm

and

http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#For%20non%20US

The latter may not be the case, but for the sake of it just see if the connector described exists in that location. You may have an odd vehicle.

The procedure you were referring to is the Alpine alarm system.

If you only have a lock system and not an alarm system it may be that you should look for a different procedure.

Thanks for your reply. I am unaware if I have an alarm system, but I do have the alpine model remote now (as i did before I lost it too.) I have yet to find a solution =(

ps: I don't believe there is a button to program remotes, which also indicates the alpine system

After much time under the dash, I was able to get the part no. for my keyless entry unit. It is an alpine unit, however, I am still unable to find a solution for disabling the valet mode. I was curious if unplugging the unit for a little bit would reset it...or mess up my car? Any suggestions?

I did this to a '97, and along with the door closing, turning the ignition key to on several times, there was a "button" on the receiver under the drivers side dash board. That had to be pushed, then the key fob in some sort of combination.

This is from a translated JDM manual, applies to 94-03 models. Dunno if it applies to USDM

Yeah I was able to get it to work, strangely enough, it was working the whole time. My keyless system is disconnected from the horn, so it wasn't indicating program mode. As long as we've owned the car, it's never honked...and it isn't even in valet mode. I guess you fix one thing, only to find another more serious thing hidden below.

I have been waiting for it to honk. I guess I will just go through the steps and see if it works.....wish me luck. :)

I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy GT wagon (U.S. model) that came from the factory with the alpine alarm and the security system. This afternoon I tried to re-enabling the audible signal (horn) that sounds each time you lock and unlock the car, but was unable to. I followed the procedure detailed in the owners manual:

"To turn the audible signal on, simultaneously depress "LOCK/ARM" and "UNLOCK/ARM" buttons for more than two seconds. The horn will sound one time to inform you that the audible signal has been turned on."

Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to re-enable the audible signal?

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I figured out what my problem was. The car was in Valet mode. In order to arm and disarm the audible signal confirmation, AND/OR program new transmitters the car cannot be in Valet mode. To arm or disarm valet mode I used the information found in this post. I knew that the car was in Valet mode when I saw that the security light on the dash would blink in two-blink intervals.

After I disarmed the Valet mode I was then able to arm the audible signal and program all of my transmitters.
