scoobydoo06 Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 just started yesterday, sounds like the blower has its own flat four motor powering it ... kinda funny, but very obnoxious. Any one know of any simple fixes? had a car before that made a close noise and it turned out to be a ball of grass clippings stuck in the fan wheel. but its... winter, and its garaged. also getting my 30k service soon with the tsb for the dash noise above the cluster gauges... just dont want to tell them the whole car needs to be sealed with spray foam... any input would be great. nate
lfdal Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Okay, if it's an 06 and still under warranty, let the dealer worry about it. Fan motors have been known to crap out. If its beyond warranty, time to pull the cabin air filter, or the access panel where it goes and have a look see. Could be something's got in there.
scoobydoo06 Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 ya just a royal pain to even deal with dealerships... trying to organize down time... and trust a grease monkey with cream leather... i need a beer. i just get worried about them getting in there and causing more dash noises...
ehsnils Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 The fan motor is actually located in a relatively accessible location under the glove box. You will need to remove that first. After that you can remove the blower motor and inspect it to see if you have any inhabitants that you don't want there. Just take care to not disconnect any YELLOW connectors since they are the airbag connectors. Another question is if you have tried to toggle the recirc on and off? That may give a clue. Maybe it has been open and a candy paper has been sucked in?
slowGT Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Well what do ya know, someone else has this too.... I just noticed this noise last night. The last time I drove the car was in the last snow/rain storm we had about a week ago. I've had this issue on other cars and have pulled the blower motors to fix the problem. Usually it will be an acorn or leaves in the fan cage. I pulled my legacy blower motor last night, and I was suprised at what I found. The plastic cover (held on by 3 plastic panel rivets), had about a cup full of rusty water. Then I pulled the motor and found out that my motor was soaked in water. It also had 2 small leaves in there. I blew it out with compressed air, and let it dry with a fan on it overnight. It is still making the noises, but it is working. How can water get in there? The AC system does smell kind of moldy when I use it (not much it's winter), is there a drain tube that can clog up?? Or did I bring in the rain from outside? I drove on the highway the whole time and not through any large puddles. What does a new blower cost at the dealer? I'd like to fix the problem of water coming in before I buy a new one though...
scoobydoo06 Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 i just bought this car about 3 months ago, so im kinda going threw everything, .... the fact that the dash started rattling and the blower sounds like it is boxer bowered as well, is kind of frustrating. i know its not any wrappers, im a neat freak... detail the car every week end and if it wernt winter i'd hand wash every week end and wax once ever other month. also dont like how the trunk opens because of the key fob button... you dont know till your driving down the street and hit a bump and the light comes on... arg!!!

Just pull the blower motor and have a look in the squirrel cage. Here are the steps to remove the blower motor... -Remove the pass side kick panel underneath the glove box. It is held on by 3 plastic push in rivets. Use a flat screwdriver and pry them out. -Unplug the connector for the fan. -I used an 8mm shallow socket (with a 1/4 inch ratchet) for the 3 screws that hold the blower in place, you can also use a torx bit too. That's all there is to it, it should take about 5 minutes.

slowGT Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I appreciate the help, but the link you gave is not working. Can you try it again? Thanks
SSpeed Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I appreciate the help, but the link you gave is not working. Can you try it again? Thanks That's weird... just go to the Warranty forum and search for "drain hose"
Erickson00 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Is there a difference between the blower motor and fan motor? I took out the fan (with attached squirrel cage) and there was very little debris. The cavity I pulled it out of seems empty. All was dry. I plugged the fan back in without reseating it, and it makes a lot of noise.
Max Capacity Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I had to clean mine a few years back, I guess the chipmunks camped out there for a while. It was much quitier when I put it back in. Blower and fan are the same thing in this instence. We're not talking about the engine cooling fan. If yours is noisy, ask the dealer to replace it. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Erickson00 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I figured that, but didn't understand how the motor could hold a cup of water (slowGT's post above)...there is no way it can hold water, the way it's designed. Water would just leak out onto the floor. So I thought maybe there was an additional part up under the dash I wasn't considering. it's noisy. I don't like having to buy a $150 part that should last the life of the car. It's just a stupid fan that had no debris or fluid in it, so why should it just go bad after 2 years?
scoobydoo06 Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 dealership called it defective, and replaced it. my Datsun fan motor is still quiet, and 26 years old... seams like quality has gone down over the years.
subeast04 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Mine just started making noise a couple of days ago (75K miles). I took it out. There was one leaf in there, and no water. I ran it with it hanging out of the blower slot and it was still making noise. I'm thinking it must be the motor making the noise as the fan looks in good shape. I'm told by the dealer this will be covered under my added security warranty (100K), however, there is a $100 deductible. It looks as though I can get a used blower assembly for about half that. Anyone one else having a similar problem when they check their fan noise? Should I trust a used replacement? Also, the part #s for the legacy blower motors on ebay dont seem to match (most of them are from totalled legacy wagons) the one on mine (2005 Legacy 2.5GT Sedan), yet the auction claims they fit all legacy 2005-2009 or something along those lines. Any input?

subeast04 Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 I got lazy and never replaced it. The noise wasn't annoying enough to force me to change it out, but I'm sure it'll get worse eventually. Like I said there were a bunch of used motor options on ebay ranging $60-$100 or so. I think I was able to find new ones as well but they were over $100. Good luck!
Fishbulb Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 My wife's 05 OB's blower started making a whirring noise about a month ago. I just removed it and when I just spin it freely I can hear it. I noticed that the white insulating mat that is attached to the panel under the fan has rust stains on it. I opened a tab on the blower itself and can see the motor and it is covered in rust. So I guess the motor is shot and will need to be replaced. We have the 100K warranty with the $100 deductible so looks like we will need to have it replaced. I priced it out online and it would be $139.
lyncha00 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 I also experienced an annoying sound coming from the blower motor on my 06 OBXT (72k), I took it out and it was perfectly clean, I think the bearing(s) are going bad. A little tight getting to all 3 screws but it comes out pretty easy. Anyone have the part number?
eb50 Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 mine sounds like a wet vac. time to pull it out. getting to it is lots of fun in the 05...
slowGT Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Maybe I am missing something, but why is pulling the blower motor harder on an 05? I only had to remove the floormat... Now if you are talking about the cabin air filter in the 05 models (or in most cases the lack of) that is a different story.

Andy64 Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I know this is an old thread, I recently tried replacing my blower motor, I currently have three brand new units in my garage and they all squeel the same as my used unit. I refuse to believe that I have four blower motors of different manufacturers that all squeel (while not impossibly, very unlikely) Has anyone found the blower motor resistor to cause a squeeling in the fan, possibly sending to much or not enough voltage. I have no problem replacing the fan or the resistor, it just seemed strange to get the same squeel from four different fans. One OEM, two tyc, and one 4seasons. I will be ordering a resistor to try that also, but from my past experience that only controls the speed settings. Would love to hear some feedback. Thanks Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
LatentWagen Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 It's the resistor causing the squeal, easy 10 min fix if you can contort yourself under the passenger dash LW's spec. B / YT / IG
