Rota Tarmac 3, 7.5" or 8" wide?

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a set of 18" Rota Tarmac 3' in hypersilver for my 2005 Legacy GT. I will probably end up going with a 225/40/18 tire, just haven't decided what brand or model yet......

Would I be better off with the 7.5 or 8 inch rim width? What would be the advantages or disadvantage of each?

Thanks!

the wider wheel will give a little better feedback because it will make the sidewalls a little stiffer.

it also gives you the option of running a 245/35 18 later if you decide you need the extra rubber.

all lgt's look strange at stock height. :)

plus the overall diameter of the 245/35/18 is 24.8 compared to 24.6 which is stock on a lgt. So wheel gap wise it shouldn't be much of a diff.

Ugh, this is the problem most first time wheel buyers have........ buying a set that's too narrow because "tirerack said so" which = weaksauce. This is why the classified forums on here and on NASIOC are littered with for sale threads of weaksauce wheels.

With that said, I would never buy an aftermarket wheel that is at least +1" in width. Back when I first bought my 04 STi in 03' and was gonna put 17x8.5 TE37s on, everyone said they were gonna rub including the place that sold them to me. But I had already done all the research and measurement and said whatever. Now 8.5" width is nothing and very common with plenty of 9-10.5" out there on imprezas including 5x100s.

Btw, I'm running 18x8.5+48 SSR GT2s with Michelin PS2 245/40/18 lowered on pinks with no rubbing on my specB.

I thought the extra half inch wouldn't cause any problems, just thought I'd get some feedback on what some of you had experienced. It's just that the vendor I have been dealing with told me that this what I needed which kind of left me a bit peeved. I am not concerned about the extra weight the 8" wheel will add and the 225 tire choice isn't written in stone.

Regarding the tire width, I checked the wheel dimension thread in this sub forum, I thought that I had read somewhere that the fenders would need to be rolled to go up to a 245 tire?

Wider would be better.....

Thanks for the input!

I doubt the fenders need rolled if you go with a 245/35/18 on an 18X8 and you are on stock suspension. If you decide to put springs on, then I would imagine you will have some rubbing if you don't roll the fenders.

In this case the speed shop was recommending the wider wheels.

That being said I pulled the trigger on Friday. Wheels should be here towards month end.

Now to pick a suitable tire.......

I live in Calgary, Alberta.

Right now my winter setup is 225/45/17 Hankook Icebears on stock rims.

As I will have a dedicated summer setup, I was thinking about going with an UHP summer tire. Then again Calgary got snow at least 1 day for every month of 2000, so a UHP AS might be in order.

Tires I have been considering include General Exclaim, Falken 912 or 452, Hankook 107 (or new V12 when available), Kumo ASX or SPT.

Lots of choices out there.....
