High fuel consumption for Legacy 2004

Hello dear friends, I am having problems with the high fuel consumptionin my Legacy 04, I did change the Oil (synthetic oil), a high end oil filter, air filter (K&N) and Bosch S/P (Platinum dual) because of my concern with high fuel costs, now the car vibrates everytime I'm at stop sign or at a red light and is also giving me less miles per full tank of gas, I use regular gas and always fill it up, can anybody help me with this problem?

'04 should be NA.

I would dump the Bosch plugs and get a set of standard NGK copper. Are you sure all the plug wires are back on, you felt the little pop at the bottom?

You may want to reset the ECU also. You are fighting winter gas blends so don't expect any stellar mileage until you get some summer blends.

I use 89 because the car just runs smoother and get 310ish per tank in winter.

Peace,

Greg

+1 I dumped the Bosch platinum plugs in my 00 Outback (CEL's, etc) and always did better with NGK (Iridium models or others). You didn't mention the total mileage on the car, but the oxygen sensors can also play a big role in the mpg. If it's manual trans, then I used synthetic trans fluid & rear diff fluid and that helped highway mileage as well.

The vibration you get indicates that it isn't firing on all cylinders, so I suggest that you check it out. It is a possibility that you have damaged your cat (not the one that may say meow) if it's misfiring badly. In that case it may get a bit expensive.

I don't know how thorough the yearly inspection is where you live, but here in Sweden they are measuring the exhaust for just about everything (CO, NOx, Lambda, HC are those I have seen...). And they are starting to read the codes this year too to see if there is an intermittent problem that you have to fix.

Bosch plugs are a no no and will eventually cause misfires. NGKs only.

:whore: (Actually +1 million would be more appropriate)

Bosch plugs suck, NGKs FTW.
