Minnesota roads and Spec B tires

purchased a new 07 Legacy Spec B 3wks ago. Great car, gonna love it in the summer but I of course urgently need to get proper tires on it. Please if anyone could suggest what they have done to remedy this, I would be very very grateful. It's down to below zero again, and we got about 1.5inch of snow today, which when packed down is pretty much impossible to quickly stop on. Slid right thru a stoplight today, and terrified I'm going to wreck this car. When I brake or even just getting out of my alley the car locks and slides and fishtails. All you Northerners and Canucks probably can relate to what I'm saying.

thank you very much

First of all, don't even think about going out with snow on the ground, you will wreck your car or even worse.

Best bet is to buy a set of 17" wheels with winter tyres as a package from one of the online tyre shops, there are lots to choose from. Alternatively get a set of used rims and then get the tyres separately. Either way, do it soon.

They are the Potenza 245/45/18. I think I can order Blizzak LM-22 snow tires from Tirerack.com as my best option. Going to do this soon, as you've advised. How much total should this cost, and is it best to have the dealer install them, or a local tire shop?

thank you guys already for the help, I'm stressing about it. Just love the car...

Just look for a cheap set of used rims on here and then get a set of Hankook Icebear W300s. Very inexpensive, but 95% of a Nokian WR...

I'm in Eden Prairie, MN.

I have Dunlop Wintersport M3s.

Samaritan Tire in Hopkins installed them without damaging my wheels (more than I can say for Discount tire).

I am very happy with them.

It is still ugly.

yeah, i live in fargo (close enough) and had the stock potenza's on my car and it sucked. winter tires definitely do wonders, went from the potenza's the first year, to good year triple treads/assurance to nokian tires and yeah... no contest really :). second set of rims is a must because you really definitely don't want to drive around when its warmer with snow tires or have to pay to have them broken down and rebalanced etc....

one thing to watch out for in these cars is to just take things slowly still (turning wise) the front end (at least in my car) slides before the back.

Call the Firestone in St. Paul on Jackson St. Ask for Eli. Tell him you're a friend of Brady's and need a set of Winter tires. He'll hook you up. Also, tell him I told you to ask for one of his better techs to make sure they won't scratch your wheels.

I got my Blizzaks for a great deal there, and he's hooked up a number of my friends.

Pssst...all of Brady's "friends" are ghey.

I just got my car this June, and my stock Yokohamas have done just fine for me. I have a friend that's a manager at Discount Tires, if you want to try those guys instead just PM me, I'll give you his contact.

I went with some 17" ASA rims and Blizzaks from tire rack. They're fantastic.

Don't forget to get the TPMS sensor. I don't know if anyone besides the dealer can synch your new wheels to your car. The alternative is to do the electrical tape mod.

To do this fancy mod, first get some black electrical tape and a knife.

Second cut a small square of the electrical tape

Third, place the electrical tape over the TPMS light on the dash.

Fourth, remember you need to check your air pressure on your own. Your TPMS will no longer be useful.

Yeah, summer tires suck in snow and ice.

Why would they give you summer tires on a Subaru? I'm sure if it was an option hardly anybody would opt for it in the North. It just adds to the extra expense of buying a spec b up here unless you live somewhere that gets a ton of snow and need snow tires anyway:(

Lol because its a sports sedan, and if a car can do a certain speed such as 130 or more then they need to sell tires rated up to that speed. Also because of the term sports sedan they didnt wanna put anythign but sporty tires on it. It adds to the cost of every LGT not just the Spec Bs
