tkey Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I'm new here so feel free to comment or move this to the appropriate forum. I've searched high and low and have come up empty. My '98 Outback has close to 200k and finally needs new head gaskets. I'm not willing to pay someone to do it, and since the car is as good as dead anyway, I figure I'll try it myself. Can someone point me to a pretty comprehensive manual on how to do this job? I know it's not easy, but I have the time and am willing to take on the challenge. Thanks!
Sarra Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 If you had one go kaput on you, you're going to need a machine shop to do some work on them anyway, planing your mating surfaces. You can't just use a dremel for that. Find a local Subie repair place that's been around forever. I got a clutch and valve job for less than $300, you should have a headgasket job for less than $500. Or, buy a 1998 LGT w/ fewer miles and be happier.
gianspi Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Have fun! http://home.comcast.net/~skipnospam/Head_gasket_replacement.html enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.

I already have a place lined up to do that job. Or, buy a 1998 LGT w/ fewer miles and be happier. I might!!
