Thargoid Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I've had a serious hesitation and knocking-type sound on acceleration at low revs (1500-2500) which has come up in the last year. I dont have any check light issues and when i took it into the dealer, he looked at the ECU readouts and didn't have any problems. However a mate with the same car did have a check light error for the knock sensor. However I couldn't find a knock sensor on his car or mine. I've done some research online and every place i go says that it should be on the block under the throttle body. Well I've looked all I can look and there is nothing there. there is two spots where it could possibly be mounted, but nothing there. So I either don't have one, or it is mounted somewhere else. Has anyone ever heard of it being mounted up near the front of the engine maybe? The engine is EJ20 for a Subaru Legacy TX 1994 Thanks for the help.
subarupartsdude Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 It's under the intake closer to the drivers side of the block. A 12mm bolt is in the center of it.It takes a pretty long extension to reach the bolt.
Thargoid Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 Had another check. Nothing on either side. there are a few empty threaded holes on the engine, but no sensors or anything. Nor any connectors for a sensor. AM I missing anything?
SBT Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 So this would be a 2nd Gen (based on JDM MY being 1 year ahead of USDM) correct? If so, the knock sensor should be right under the number 4 intake runner, (passenger side, closest to the firewall) ~halfway between the number 4 cylinder head and the engine center-line. Small, but visible. I'm looking through my 2nd Gen shop manual but it's getting late and the pages are all photos, so no search capability. Check that and let us know what you find. Thargoid Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 Sorry. JDM, MY and USDM mean nothing to me. According to my haynes manual, my car looks like it is a 1994/6 model. It is 2nd Gen though. This is a NZ car, so i guess when you say passenger side, that would be drivers side for me? I ll check under the runners themselves again, have another look. thanks.

JDM - Japan Domestic Model (Exported to Australia/New Zealand) and the Japanese models always proceed the U.S. Domestic Models (USDM) by 1 year. Hence, the JDM 2nd gen Legacy product line ran from 1994-1998, while the USDM 2nd gen Legacy product line ran from 1995-1999. So your 1994 is the 1st year of the gen 2 Legacy model line. No, I was referencing the position from a NZ right-hand drive perspective (knowing that your passenger sits to the left) so the sensor is located below the intake runner closest to the firewall, on the left side of your engine (viewed from your right-hand driver's seat). You might also try checking the Legacy-specific forum at http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13 for information from some of the 2nd gen NZ/AUS brethren. They may have more region-specific information than I can provide. Good luck, SBT - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
Thargoid Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Hey, i've had another look. No joy. It is a small, silver circle thing, isn't it? There is nothing like that there. A few points where one could go, but nothing under anything I can see. Thanks for explaining the terminology. It makes me cringe to do it, but i might have to go a garage to see if they can find it. . .
SBT Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Good luck and do check with the Nasioc crew - especially with those from NZ/AUS on the site. I'm sure someone has seen this specific model and knows where, "if" there is one. SBT - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
