diamarillo Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I want to get a car starter for my 08 LGTL but I'm not quite sure what to get if I should pay the $450 for the factory starter or if I should just go to some garage for $200 and get it installed...would it really matter as far as function and such as long as its a reliable garage? or will this effect my warranty?? my salesman told me to go to some place he knew and not to trust the subaru tech's...which I think is weird...what do you think?
WhatV8 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Are you referring to a remote starter system, not the engine's starter, right?? I would see if the factory version of the remote starter is backed by a good warranty and dealership/factory support. If so, you should consider it as it was likely designed for your model car. Almost all aftermarket versions are custom fit (i.e.- not plug-n-play) and you can run into problems if the installation isn't done correctly. Your choice, just do the proper research and good luck.
pillboy Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 It would surprize me you would get a (good) shop to install a remote starter for $200. We paid $400+ a few years ago on my wife's OB (obviously there are different price points depending on features - ours has two way communication so you know if the car has started). I imagine the Subaru one is just a module that plugs in and a remote. I am also willing to bet the Subaru one also prevents starter engagement if you turn the key past "on" once you get into the car. I would pay extra NOT to have someone hacking into my car's wiring harness splicing wires. Get the Subaru one. It is still ugly.
Gire Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Get aftermarket. For less than the price of the factory starter you can get a 2-way monitoring aftermarket alarm and starter combo (plus a turbo timer). I've had a Compustar in my car for 3 years now and love it. I have the Compustar integrated into the factory alarm and it over-rides it. Plus the 2-way remote control tells me what's going on with the car so there's no guessing. Call your local 12 volt audio shop and get some options.
