Inspector Gadget Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 I posted this in the Legacy forum; but, for some reason thought I might get the answer in here, from you, my neighbors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Living in the mountains and being a skier has its benefits and its drawbacks; we've had more the five feet of snow in the last week here in Park City. With another storm last night and several passes by the plow, the entrance to my driveway had a nice berm of snow today. When I tried to back out of the driveway, I immediately came to stop and the engine died. Cranking the engine over, it took several long attempts before the engine restarted. And then I had to give it some gas before it would relight. When it finally did restart, the check engine, ABS and Cruise lights came on. It also sounds like the cooling fan is running. I have no idea how or why this happened. Well, I know how I got stuck, it's the aftermath I don't understand. I have an AccessPort, but am a novice regarding it's capabilities. Can I use the AccessPort to restore the natural order? Do I dare drive the car in this condition? HELP!
mwiener2 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 5MT or 5EAT? use the AP to pull the code My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
Inspector Gadget Posted February 2, 2008 Author Posted February 2, 2008 5MT Not sure how to pull the code, but I'll figure it out.
BigBad Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Perhaps you experienced "Limp Mode"? Did you spin your wheels? See this previous thread specifically post 14 http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6214&highlight=spinning+wheel+cel
mwiener2 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 5MT doesn't freak out with wheel spin like 5EAT does. You most likely stalled it and flooded the engine. The long cranking with a flooded engine probly threw a emissions related or misfire code. My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons

See this previous thread specifically post 14 http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6214&highlight=spinning+wheel+cel I absolutely experienced wheel spin, but only after restarting the engine. Post 14 sounds very much like my scenario and jaycee's car is a manual trans as well.
mwiener2 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 That post is 3 years old. ... and the first one I've heard of in a 5MT. I get PLENTY of wheelspin when I play in the snow and I've never gotten a CEL (5MT) My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
bigb3630123 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 It happened to me once last year in heavy heavy snow.... I called my dealer right away and they told me it was probably snow in the wheels messing with the ABS sensors. I got a carwash and it was gone. Hope yours does the same
chenc544 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 5MT Not sure how to pull the code, but I'll figure it out. Just plug the AP in and there is an option on the menu that says something like read error code. It will then give you a number that you can look up or just post here.

I get PLENTY of wheelspin when I play in the snow and I've never gotten a CEL (5MT)I didn't notice the date, but the post seemed applicable to my situation. It seems odd to me as well since I regularly spin the wheels playing in the snow. Who can resist a few donuts in a snowy parking lot!

It has never happened to me with the MT.
Inspector Gadget Posted February 2, 2008 Author Posted February 2, 2008 Here are the codes: P1518 - starter switchP1153 - o2 sensorP1152 - o2 sensorP0137 - o2 sensorP0851 - neutral voltage switch
Underdog Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 First thing that came to my mind is you backed up in snow and pluged your exhaust. The Crimson Dynamo
mwiener2 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 looks like P0851 - neutral voltage switch may have been sitting in there for a while. The three o2 sensor codes are emissions related. Most liekly from the flooding of the engine. I don't think plugging the exhaust would've thrown those codes. That's how we check for exhaust leaks, we plug the end with a shop rag and feel for leaks. starter code i'm not so sure about....maybe from the excessive cranking. Just reset the ECU with the AP. Turn key to the "on" position. Wait 8 sec, then start it. If the codes come back, go to the dealer, if they don't, forget it ever happened. Inspector Gadget Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Thanks mwiener! It looks like your suggestion worked. Hopefully that's the end of it and I can forget it ever happened. Thanks again, I appreciate your help.
bsdzine Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 First thing that came to my mind is you backed up in snow and pluged your exhaust. i know MW said this is how you check for leaks and the cars don't throw a code.... but is it possible for this to happen? say for example you back into a little bit of snow and it just gets packed up in there (we could even go overboard and pretend the snow magically froze as well).... just out of curiosity. brian
mwiener2 Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 It is possible, but extremely unlikely. You'd have to plug BOTH tailpipes completely. There's also the donut gasket that would leak under that kind of pressure. It's just sealed by the pressure of two springs. If it was plugged completely, it would just stall anyways. Hope yours does the same I was stuck in knee deep snow and we tried to shovel and push the car out. My clutch is nice and smoky now. I got the Cruise and Check Engine lights as well. Nice wheel shimmy also. It went away as the snow was cleared out of the tires and the engine was restarted a few times over the next day. I abuse my cars.
icy Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I was stuck in knee deep snow and we tried to shovel and push the car out. My clutch is nice and smoky now. I got the Cruise and Check Engine lights as well. Nice wheel shimmy also. It went away as the snow was cleared out of the tires and the engine was restarted a few times over the next day. I abuse my cars. Another symptom of this is that the cruise control will not work. Just to reiterate. Shut the car down for a while or clear out the wheels at a car wash. Any one know where the ABS sensor is?
