Johnny Ryall Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 im looking to buy my first subaru. Im looking for a 1997-1999 era legacy outback wagon. I have been told to avoid 1999 models, because of auto trans, and speedometer issues. Is this true? what are the issues exactly. what else should i look for besides timing belt having been done. im looking for under 110000 miles. and nice condition. are the auto transmissions good on these cars? I have never heard anything bad about subarus, and this will be my first non ford car.
Mnb5023 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 i use to have an 99 outback. When i would drive it the speedometer would not work sometimes. The miles would not run when it wasn't working. i did not understand it but that was the way it was
kamusta1 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I used to have a 99' and the only problem I had was the speedometer issue. I had 120,000+ miles on it with out a single problem until a guy ran a red light and totalled it.
mand3j Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 memory serves, head gaskets commonly blow on that era.
SLegacy99 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 My '99 had a speedo problem. Twas not a cheap fix either. Other than that, I can't complain about any of my 90s Subarus.

ScubaSteve44 Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Head gaskets blow from '97-mid '03. Autos have potential torque bind You'll find a bunch of 90's info here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3
P06781 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Had a 98 outback ....blew the headgasket and traded for LGT... Jim
