phenryiv1 Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I just picked up a 2008 QSM 2.5i SE 5MT (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80112) and am trying to decide what modifications to do first. I am already getting the windows tinted and changing the poo-poo rubber shifter to a WRX leather 5MT knob. My potential choices are: -Short shifter (probably Kartboy) -RSB (any brand) -Limited steering wheel -Save money for full suspension or some stiffer/lower springs I am not trying to make this into a roaring race champion. I just want for it to be more comfortable and stylish from a visual standpoint and to have slightly better-than-stock handling. I'd love to close in the wheel gap, but I hate yanking and tossing brand new stock struts. If there were decent springs that work with stock dampers, I'd take that route for now. But pairing stiffer, lower springs with dampers not designed for it is a sure recipie for poor performance. phenryiv1 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 buy better tires. If I buy better tires, they will be 3-season/summer tires. I am not about to replace the Yokos (which seem to be rated pretty well for what they are- all season passenger tires) for another set of all-seasons. I may do that this spring/summer, but now is not the time of year to buy and install summer performance tires. If I had the RE-92s, I would be swapping them out as we speak (or would never have bought the car with them), but having read up on the Yokos, I will stick with them for all-season use. RaGe Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 scented tree for rearview mirror? OTM. Sorry I didn't mean to start a war which mainly forum people is all about .
WhatV8 Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Don't worry about the Yoko's, they work pretty good. I have had a lot of snow time these past few weeks around here and @ 20K miles they are holding up well on treadwear. I would save up for suspension work and just drop in a K&N panel filter and call it a day in the engine compartment. You could upgrade your shifter knob to a "Knobmeister" version: http://www.knobmeister.com/DirectorPage.htm Quite a few folks in the SVT Contour group (previous vehicle) used him with good success. Good luck on your new ride!

aldouse Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 you novice! lols. get springs and rsb. if you wont do tires first. and let everything else fall into place from that point forward. -- yay for the sig! -- my garage!
phenryiv1 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 lols. get springs and rsb. if you wont do tires first. and let everything else fall into place from that point forward. Tires are a priority, once weather allows. Putting on summer tires in January isn't a safe strategy. Any suggestions for springs? Do we get any benefit from running GT or Spec.B springs? I tried searching on that subject and got nowhere. HDs seem like the struts of choice, and spring preferences seem to be a personal choice. I want something that is slightly stiffer, only slightly lower, and pair well with off-the-shelf struts. gianspi Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 My top 3 favorites: 1) Tires 2) Short Shifter w/ F&R bushings 3) HIDs enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.
Fivspeed Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Considering the window tint myself. Also considering aftermarket mufflers/axle-backs. I like the sound of the boxer engine revving though. If you don't want to increase exhaust noise, I'd suggest LGT mufflers if you can find them for cheap. I have them on mine and the mufflers and tips are different. Direct bolt-on and the fill out the exhaust cutouts on the bumper much better. The tips stick out about and inch further and the outlets are larger. I would guess they flow better as well since coming off a turbo'd car. I desparately want to improve the audio system but have very little knowledge of the best way to fix it. The lack of bass of any sort is killing me. Considering removing the air box resonator. The car is so new I haven't bothered to investigate the potential benefit, if any. Also planning to install a seat heater in the driver's seat when the weather gets better. I'm in no rush since the car is still so new.

I may fool w/ exhaust later, but for now I don't need more power, so why spend $$$$ on something that will contribute no function to my vehicle? I think that the SS and a shift knob will be first, then tint, and then look for a limited steering wheel while saving money for good 3-season tires for the non-winter months. roadsclr Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Congrats on the sharp Rue! I bought the same in May - 13K miles on it. Love it! I ordered it with the fog light kit. Yes it was overpriced but it definitely enhanced the look of the front end considerably. Since it was factory ordered I didn't pay for install. Also, you may want to consider the STI short throw that's available directly from Subaru for our cars. It has made a huge difference in quicker shifts and precision. By far the best mod so far. To cap it off I added the round Subaru/MOMO shift know. It's black leather/silver appearance matches the interior perfectly and it fits like a glove. Best of luck with your ride!
phenryiv1 Posted February 2, 2008 Author Posted February 2, 2008 Is the height of the STi shifter lower than the stock shifter? Patrick Looking for spacers or adapters to install aftermarket speakers in the doors of your Legacy? CLICK HERE or PM me! http://www.carstereoadapters.com./
roadsclr Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 I'm not sure about the actual height differences of STI shift lever stem vs. OE. However when I replaced the rubber shift knob with the MOMO/Subaru knob it definitely reduced the overall height. Enough to notice. I can snap a photo of the setup in the next day or two and post.
daver192 Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I would recommend front and rear sways as the most profound change in the LGI'S demeanor, and the most bang for the buck.

I know that the audio controls don't work with the SE stereo, but are you saying that the leather steering wheel won't work in place of the rubber SE wheel?
