cmgtstan Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 I have spent the past 2 days researching everything and anything about installing a factory navigation system from an 06 automatic Legacy into an 05 manual LGT. From what i have gathered, the wiring necessary to hookup the nav system is not present on the 05. Would it be possible to use the factory screen along with a Kenwood G510 unit and not have any wires hooked up into the car system? It would strictly be a navigation system. Any and all help is appreciated.

celerion Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 It is possible... there is just alot of work involved. I think there is a a post on here with someone using the G510 unit with the factory setup. Hooking up the factory display can be done... If you want to know how let me know... I can give you all the info I have.
cmgtstan Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 I know that my factory wiring harness does not have the necessary wiring or plugs to hook up the 06 factory nav system. Will your method of hooking up the factory display integrate with ECU or will it strictly be a Subaru Naviagation System? I have actually seen the posts where someone used the G510 unit and would be very interested in going about that route. How indepth would the installation get? Meaning cutting the oem harness and rewiring and integrating into the factory system or would it be strictly an independent Nav system using the factory screen? I would prefer the later
fweasel Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 the Kenwood G510 does not make use of dead reckoning. It gets no input from the ECU. The only data it uses comes from the GPS receiver, WAAS, and TMC traffic inputs. ignore him, he'll go away.
celerion Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I retrofitted a factory nav into my 05. It had no wires or plugs either. Basically what I did was buy the 05 factory wiring manual, and a 06 wiring manual. Looked at the two and figured out what power/inputs I needed to get the system to run. Now... if you want all the funtions associated with the screen... then some splicing into the factory harness will be neccessary... but if all you want is the screen to work for a nav set up, you can do it without cutting/splicing any wires. Of course you may have to for the Nav specific portion (G510). You will have to do something about the airbag light that is part of the clock. I purchased the relocation kit (moved it to the ashtray area). Otherwise you end up with a light on your gauge cluster.. and thats annoying. But you can have ALL factory funtions work even though there is no factory wiring in the car.
celerion Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 As you can see it is the factory set up.. proof that its an 05 is the crazy airbag light in the ashtray area...anything is possible.. you just need to want it bad enough.
cmgtstan Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 This sounds very interesting and doable. Could you send me the information you have on your install?
celerion Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Let me assemble up what I got. I'm more then happy to help ya out. Exactly where is Graham, WA? I'm in PDX OR.
VXCL Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 NO Get either a full aftermarket unit or build a car pc nice... to OP seems like you have all the answers you need, but yeah the easiest and cleanest route is to uses the am kenwood unit and a factory screen and ignore the other functions, but since someone already did the leg work you might as well hookup everything. the only question is how much is the oem dash piece and screen?? a totaled legacy with navi would really come in handy the relocation of the clock alone is about $170 MAYHEM #122/22 STS NNJR SCCA AUTOX4U.COM XENON RETRO GUIDE

VXCL Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Thanks. The LGT bunch is like no other! Graham is about 15 minutes Southeast of Fort Lewis or Tacoma. please update with final outcome. -costs of kenwood unit, oem dash and navi lcd -if you did hook up all oem features and how easy or bad it was -hookup of am kenwood unit -what amp / speaker did you go with for navi audio, where mounted, etc and whatever else you find. would be real helpful to compile the info other then just knowing it can be done. i want to do it once warmer weather comes around, but was just going to use the navi, but if its not too bad ill just hook up everything for the hell of it. good luck peace MAYHEM #122/22 STS NNJR SCCA AUTOX4U.COM XENON RETRO GUIDE
celerion Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Just a quick note.. I didn't forget or drop off the planet... I work overnights and sleep most of the day... I'm off this weekend and working on compiling the info and finding some pics... Its a work in progress. I'll try to have all the stuff I think you need by monday.
cmgtstan Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Thanks. Just a little anxious to get started on the project.
sw686blue Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 I'd also like to see how you (celerion) did this.
