In a one hour enduro I know I can pass them anytime on the long straights tracks. No need to win the first turn, or the second, or the third....the old truism, "nobody ever won a race at the first turn, but plenty have lost the race there" .

 

And that's twice now a Pro3 and I have had issues at Spokane. Last year one booted me off the track in the Hare & Hound race.

 

The Good News: B&R says they will have the correct R-160 to pickup tomorrow, plus another spare. I'll see you at Pacific Raceways this weekend?

I'm planning on being there for part of it. At worst, it will be Sunday afternoon in the Driver Services tent. At best, it will be all day Sunday.

Got two R-160s from LGTs in nearby junkyards. For future ref if you need to do this the mark is in white paint on top of the diff. Here you can see the JP mark under the yellow numbers put on by the yard:

When I re-installed it I noticed the line from the diff goes to the pump first, then the cooler, then back to the diff. This is counter to the pump makers who say to route Diff>Cooler>Pump>Diff. That's because they don't want hot oil destroying the pump.

 

I'm guessing the original Subaru factory team did it this way to get the coolest oil to the diff, possibly because the pump action would add heat...for now I've stayed with the original routing but if I get pump failures I'll switch it.

You can see why bigger wheels-tires will be hard to do, the current ones already rub on the ducts.

 

Anyone know a good Cusco LSD rebuilder? On examination I think the LSD itself can be saved, it was the ring, pinion, and side bearing that got trashed.

Have you asked Joe if he had any Diffs left over? Last time I was there he had some in boxes.

 

No but I will ask him about any spares. I'm surprised he hasn't suggested it already!

Any chance you can post a shot of how you're interfacing the brake duct hose to the back of the rotor hat? Trying to figure that part out on my system...

 

When I get back from the races, the car is already loaded up...be glad too though next week.

Thanks, hope to see you sometime soon at the track. Always wanted to see a full on race prepped wagon. My '05 is track only now as I have an Audi daily driver but its got a LONG way to go before its anything like yours!

I've got the Roo ducts already installed and plumbed with hose all the way to the fog light ports so thats all good. The link to the backing plates from Summit looks like its doable but I'm sure its going to take some modification and hacking to make them work for my application. But isn't that aways the way? :) I'm mainly wondering how it all gets routed without binding on any of the suspension parts especially when the wheel is turned. Seems a bit trickier on AWD cars. Looking forward to Sgt. Gators pics when he gets the opportunity to snap some.

It was great meeting you too! I could have used your help a bit later. I went out for the ST race and one lap in the engine sputters a few times.

Next lap it dies on the front straight. I pull into the hot pits and it restarts, seems fine, so they send me back out on course. 3/4 of the way around it dies again. The tow truck comes out and pulls me into the paddock, the car restarts and I drive it into my parking area. Then it dies and won't start at all.

 

I'm going nuts. :mad:

 

I pull the AIM data and see that my fuel pressure is goofy that last lap. So I turn the key and no sound of the electric fuel pump in the fuel cell. No pressure on the FP gauge on the fuel rail.

I'm thinking it's gone bad. A friend comes over and we tear into the fuel cell firewall cover, but OF COURSE there's 5 screws that only a square head driver can unscrew. I search the web and see theres a Home Depot a few miles away and go buy a square drive. I'm thinking the whole time that this is pointless, there's no way I'm going to drain 20 gallons of fuel and dismantle the fuel cell in the paddock, even if I can find a new pump.

 

We get the cover off and bingo, the fuel pump elec connection is not tight! I re-plug it in, all is good.

 

Of course by now I've already missed the start of the Enduro race.....

 

The cause of all this is last week I was trying to fix my LOW FUEL Warning light and unplugged the electrical connections on the fuel cell. I apparently didn't plug the pump back in hard enough, and it wiggled loose over the course of the day.

 

More lessons learned!

 

But I 'll be back racing Sunday!, No damage done.

 

Again, It was great meeting an LGT forum member at the race. Did your pics turn out ok? BTW the Porsche next to me took 2nd, Mike in his BMW won....

Ohh man! I wish I was there to help out. The fuel cell system on the car is awesome but clearly made for series racing. Your not quite running the standard walboro/dw65c in the stock surge tank.

Great pics Gex!

 

The high speed refill system is awesome if you are Pro racing in long endurance races. You can dump in 10 or 20 gallons in a matter of a few seconds. For the rest of us it's a pain in the a$$$$. I mean that both ways, painful to use and painful to the wallet. Not recommended.

 

The Silver Porsche won his class. He has 500+ HP, 2800 lbs, and as you can see massive downforce. We race in the same group. Well "race" we don't, we are on the track at the same time is a better description. I'll be hitting 145 on the straight and he goes by me like I'm driving backwards, around 190. Then in the long sweeper he stays glued to the track...keeps me on my toes and checking mirrors! He's a really nice guy, in fact his whole family was out there crewing for him. His dad bought the car new in 1978 and they have been modding it ever since. That car is the end product of 36 years of modding. He's been working on and driving the car since he was 18! You can see the love that family has put in the car, it's beautiful. His dad was out there polishing off every little mark after each session.....

 

Race recap Sunday:

The qualifying session was a little drizzly, which is our big advantage, even better if it's pouring! I qualified 10th in the group, which in this group is great! However they used Saturdays best times or Sundays qual times for the race gridding, so I was way in the back. It worked out best because the rain stopped 2 hours before the race and the track was pretty much dried out, so I was gridded in the right place.

 

At the start I was sandwiched between two Alpha Romeos who were also in the ST class, which was cool because I'd have two cars in my own class to race against while we watched the GT1 and SPO cars smoke by us...

 

I got in front of the Alpha that was gridded next to me at the green flag and kept him behind me from then on. The other Alpha was right in front of me for 2-3 laps then I passed him in turn 8, opened the lead on the front straight, and never saw either of them again.

 

In the final results I beat the two Alphas in ST and a few of the other cars in the Group, including a Corvette.

 

I was very happy with the way the car ran. The K-Sport full race COs work well, no complaints there. Several of the other racers mentioned that the car looks really well sorted suspension wise and they are amazed at the power and handling of our Legacy GTs.

 

The rear VLSD/Diff worked well too. There were a couple of corners were if I powered up too fast I would kick the rear end out but I always caught it before a full spin erupted. I'll get the Cusco 1.5 way rebuilt though, it's probably worth .5 - 1 - maybe 1.5 second a lap.

 

One of the former NASCAR ground pounders in our group was not so lucky, in the very first lap of qualifying he overpowered a corner, spun backwards and covered the track with gravel. It looked like a D-9 had pushed a load of gravel onto the track!

 

Later this week I'll post up the full race video. I have business travel for a couple of days so it may be Thursday or so.

boxkita I'll send you the AIM logs when I get back in town. I'm a total newb to analyzing the AIM data system, it's one of my goals this summer to master it. One of the Pro3 drivers is supposed to be a total guru on them and teaches classes.

 

I forgot to mention, with the VLSD it was MUCH easier to trail brake into turns. The understeer straight off the track was one. If I needed to touch the brakes in mid turn ( example in heavy traffic and the car in front of you slows down...) I could tap on the brakes and still stay in the turn no problem.

I think with the Cusco locking up on braking it forces both rear wheels to turn at the same speed, so the car doesn't want to turn. I have a feeling that when Tarzan Yamada was driving it in 2007 they tuned it as a 2 way and hard as hell so he could do drift moves with it....just guessing but it seems likely. When I have the Cusco rebuilt I'll have it tuned lighter as a 1.5 way or maybe even as a 1 way if that's possible.

 

And the pic of the Datsun 510.. that guy has raced that car for 25 years, and gone thru 27 engines....LOL.

http://www.jamescolborn.com/ - Not sure he teaches classes, although he & Dan Rogers put on an after-race chalkboard talk about AIM last year at Portland. He did put together a set of YT videos about it.

 

Roger Caddell (PNW native) is the national training instructor for AIM and does classes in the area on the occasion. You can friend him on FB and get his latest schedule. Worth attending especially as he uses data examples from class.

I fricken love that Datsun 510. I probably have 10 pictures of it. I tried to buy a race prepped one in Aberdeen not that long ago. Just couldn't meet on my lowball :(.

 

I have a ton of photos from the novice practice and pro3 no points race if you guys know a good place to post them/if any of the racers want pics.
