2001 Legacy GT Shifter Slop

Hi all!

Brand new here. Nice forum!

Ok, I'll get right to it...

I did a search, but nothing I saw quite addressed the problem, so here goes:

My wife bought a 2001 Legacy for our daughter. It has 80K on the clock and seems to be in pretty good shape. Plenty of pep, no leaks, etc. However....

When I drove it, there seemed to be excessive side to side movement of the shifter (in neutral) before it would hit the centering springs. I'd say that the top of the shifter would easily flop 5 or 6 inches sideways in either direction before hitting any resistance. I can shift the car ok, but it seems to me that the centering springs should bring the shifter (in neutral) to the center of the shift pattern (3rd and 4th position) and hold it there until you select a gear. Am I wrong?

Is there a fix for restoring the spring tension that centers the shifter?

BTW, I'm a newb to Subaru's and this forum, but not to high performance cars and motorcycles. Once a gearhead, always a gearhead!

Thanks in advance for your help!

That's a new one....

It's a mechanical linkage on the 5MT. I've never investigated what centers the shifter but I do have the Surbaru service manual for the 2000-2004 in PDF if you want to investigate this more.

Just PM me and I'll send you a copy.
