The Jake Posted March 22, 2007 Share Posted March 22, 2007 I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but I recently bought a '97 Legacy 2.5GT and the previous owner said that there was a turbo kit available. I'm sure other mods would be necessary as well, but has anyone done this? What kind of hp gains are possible, and how expensive is it? Kraziken Posted March 24, 2007 Share Posted March 24, 2007 The turbo kit is a bit pricey, and also a bit limited if you want to try boosting past the 7psi I think the kit is pushing. General consensus is a swap would be better. I looked seriously at the kit, but as my car crept closer to the 100,000 mark on the odometer, I figure a swap made much more sense. A 2.2L is more reliable to turbo and you can add more boost, but Im not sure how much. I know that the 2.5L in our cars isnt reccomended to have more than 6 psi. A) The engine has been swapped once, the current one is still the 2.5L, but only has about 50,000 miles on it, and B) what kind of engine would you swap it out for? It depends on your power goals and preferences, budget, etc. I would look for the 2.0 WRX motor. I was able to buy a complete motor, turbo, intercooler, ecu and wiring for $3,000. I ended up trading that as credit toward a STI engine. In either case once you do a WRX swap of some sort, it opens up all the tuning and aftermarket options that are available for the Impreza folks. You can turn around and sell your N/A engine to recoup some of the costs. The 2nd gen's suffer from head gasket failures, so it won't be difficult to find a buyer that might be interested in your engine. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't know that I want to go that far, I like the car I've got, was just interested in making it a little faster (not that it needs to be). Jake Sure, If you are curious, the turbo kit, was around $5k last time I looked at it. Unless you have money burning a hole in your wallet, you might as well run your N/A engine until it poops out. I'd recommend suspension upgrades over any N/A power upgrades at the moment. I had my car for 3, almost 4 years with just suspension mods before I did my swap, and I was pretty happy. I bought/sold a couple of parts from the kit to better suite my application.
