Should I really be needing front brakes already?!?!

I just brought my LGT 5eat sedan in to my dealer for the 30k service, I brought it in 10k overdue (40k on it) and after they finished they told me I needed front brakes (costing around 475). I was wondering if this is a common thing, when have you guys had to do yours? After driving it for about a day after I did start to notice the sluggish stopping power.. They told me it was at 15% and once they are that low they start wearing twice as fast.. I cannot afford another 475 right now.. ahhh. what should i do?

Yeah, replacing brakes is a fairly easy DIY job. And shoudl be a lot cheaper than $475, unless possibly you go with very high end stuff and replace pads and rotors.

That said, 40K isn't too bad for a set of brakes, I've seen some vehicles that needed new pads every 10K. Granted, one of those was a Legacy postal wagon, so it made a LOT of stops in 10K miles, but the others were just regular driven cars.

stock brake pads only last about 30k anyways.. so yea, I would say that 40k on the brake pads are in need.. the rotors may last another 20k before you change them.. $475 sounds right for all 4 rotors and all brake pads + labor..

a pair of rotors is around $120 and the brake pads all around are around $160.. so figure the rest is labor sounds right..

sorry if this is slightly off topic, but is it true that dealers will replace pads under warranty if they wear below 5% in the 36k period? I'm quite sure I heard this from the service guy at irvine subaru. They said our legacy was down to 15% in the rear and 10% up front back at around 21k miles. but dang...$475 for new pads? O_O

I just replaced mine at 60k. And it was the right time. I'm also driving mainly on back roads and 4 lane, but mainly on off times so no stop and go for me.

Subaru OE rotors are more like $110/disc (not / pair) and pads are $100 front and $70 or so rear.

What I'm getting at, is $475 is impossible for parts and labor for all 4 corners. The parts alone will be $650, then add the dealer gaffe charge of $75/hr labor, and you're talking more like $800+

Are you particularly tied to using stock pads and rotors (provided you need new rotors)? There are many aftermarket offerings that offer just as good or better perfomance, and can be had for less.

On the topic of DIY on brakes - this is one of those things where I feel you should NOT try to figure it out yourself if you have never done it. Instead have someone who knows what they are doing teach you. We're talking about the brakes here, man. No room for error.

Where are you located?

costing around 475

you gotta love the stealership. before they gave you the quote did they kindly ask you to bend over? what are they doing, resurface and new pads or new rotors and new pads?

I bet new rotors would cost about the same as resurfacing. And I'd get Hawk HPS pads ($85 front) not OEM. And bring in your own high quality brake fluid. Just using better fluid will make your brakes feel better.

^ I don't use mine much, either: still had something like 80% of the front pads good when I did my 30k service at 38k miles. For some reason I've always been real easy on brakes.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!

$475 is probably stacked labor from pads and rotors. Where it should be together since the job is all the same.

Some shops will charge you like 1 hour for pads and 1 hour for rotors. Basically double labor :)

Find another shop or dealer to give you a quote. You could probably ask how much it would be if you brought your own parts in also.
