A Few highlights from the article about the korean impostor:
Rio goes for Rex By JAMES STANFORD 11jul03 The Sport-Pac adds $3000 to the price of a regular Rio ($14,990 drive away).
The Sport pack is a full 20% of the cars total value! I'll bet depreciation will be a kind bedfellow, as well!
The sporty Rio runs the regular 71kW 1.5-litre engine and takes 15 seconds to go from 0-100km/h.
I have seen kids on skateboards accellerate faster than that! I can't beleive the word sporty was used in that sentence.
It comes with Pedders sports suspension along with the body kit and a non-functional bonnet scoop. On the STi the scoop forces air into the intercooler to feed the turbo, but the Rio's scoop is just there to look cool. The Rio also has what is described as "a World Rally Championship-style rear wing", even though Kia does not have much of a rally heritage, or even a car in the WRC.
*Cough*-knock-off-*cough*
Kia says it did not intend to model its Sport-Pac on the Subaru WRX. Kia spokesman Edward Rowe says: "It's just a coincidence." He says the sporty Rio has been designed to mimic all rally cars, not just the Subaru. Subaru, Citroen and Ford all have cars in the WRC with wings and scoops like that, not just Subaru," Rowe says.
*Cough*-Bull Sh!t-*Cough* It is called "Subaru is famous for this, so lets copy them."
Kia is confident the Sport-Pac will be popular with young people who want a car that looks fast but who can't afford to buy or maintain a car such as a WRX or a Lancer EVO. "This conversion won't affect people's insurance premiums and that is quite important for people who are 25," Rowe says. "It is also very affordable." [\quote] No show, AND no go? I think the word is "klep-to." A WRX is affordable. An Impreza is more affordable. A Kia with a 3000$ fake sport pack is just plain cheap. And since when is a WRX such a beast to maintain and insure? Maybe an STi, but Imprezas and WRXs don't strike me as maintenance hogs, and will get to 62mph in a time measured by a stop watch, rather than a calendar, like that kia.

The $15,000 STi... Horsepower not included. Hey, the automotive world is already thriving on poser machines, like the 1994 Civic SiR I saw on the road the other day (Yeah Right). A large percentage of the general car-buying public are not enthusiasts, so they will not understand just how much of an atrocity this Kia is. Hell, on a side-note, Ford has been pulling off the non-functional hood-scoop thing with large success since the early eighties. So from a marketing perspective, I believe this car will be a success. Its a chance to own an STi for little cash. The chicks will dig it! Only the enthusiasts will know otherwise.

Talk about depreciation hit! Easy way to accelerate getting Kia owners upside down in their car values so they have to stay with Kia branding. When I saw the first, low-light picture, I was unable to read the oval auto "marque" on the front grille and thought it was a Subaru. Quickly cleared up when I got to the other pics and saw that it truly was a Rio then it was what the heck...Kia is ripping off the STI look with a poser wannabe. SBT (indignant)
