Beanboy Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 First time ever I wanted an Outback XT. Plenty of great parking spots in Boston/Cambridge today, but many with some serious rock-hard ice potholes/ice ridge from the plows. I'll drive over most and get a scrape here and there, but these were the lower fascia removal variety. Would have been nice to have another 2.5" inches of clearance! -B http://www.standardshift.com
leftride Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 i have to say i have enjoyed the clearance this winter. *vb gallery*
erito Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 the clearance is more of a joy than a bad thing all year round for me
SLStormin Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Yeah, I was rallying in the aftermath of the storm last week and forgot all about my LGT envy.
DukeTrout Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 We've only had the one real snow this year in town, so I haven't had as much chance to enjoy the clearance. In fact, I intentionally drove through what looked like a 2' plowed wall of snow, and it was so disappointing. Didn't feel a thing, just a little snow on the intercooler. Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!
Gire Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Logging roads and dirt trails around my in-law's ranch are where the OB's really shine. When I take my wife and kid to their property, I have to gingerly make it down to their property, and quickly park the legacy for the rest of the vacation. I then borrow their full-size pick up or one of two OB's that they have. The OB's go everywhere the truck goes- amazingly. Yes, every winter and summer I get periods of OB envy too....
Gire Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 well..... I believe that their height adjustable suspension has been an electrical nightmare for good 'ol Audi (BIG SURPRISE!) (I'll try to find int4rweb stories to substantiate this claim...)
red beast Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 with the clearance i have, these slide under and out the back with ease. http://www.painetworks.com/photos/fs/fs1816.JPG
DukeTrout Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 I swear the OB suspension gives me vertigo now... What it really needs is height adjustable suspension like the Audi allroad. I don't know if you'd want all the extra weight, though. "Hey, that suspension is making my car slower. What gives?" Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!
Beanboy Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 Subarus had height-adjustable suspension and more ground clearance over 20 years ago: 4wd hatchback: 8.9" with adjustable suspension up to 9.3" 4wd station wagon DL: 8.1" with adjustable suspension up to 9.1" 4wd Station wagon GL: 8.3" with adjustable suspension up to 9.3" Brat: 8.3" with adjustable suspension up to 9.3" -B http://www.standardshift.com
vxracer Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 I used to have one of those old GL wagons- my first car. if you flipped the rear seat up, there was a large nut in the center that you turned to raise and lower the rear. in the front, on each side above or below? the coil spring, there were two nuts you turned to raise and lower. essentially, i rode all the time high, and drove on the beach in DE frequently. so i guess i can say i have owned the grandpa to an outback!!! lol
erito Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 guess alot of people in southern sweden wanted an outback these days several hundred stuck in the snow and rescued with military band-wagons (right word for the vehicle or??) http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/special/bildspel/visa/nyheter/0,4542,4917,00.html http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/vader/story/0,2789,1006431,00.html http://www.expressen.se/index.jsp?a=889612 but they are not as used to alot of snow as we up north. many drive studdless or all-season tires in the south.
Garandman Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 guess alot of people in southern sweden wanted an outback these days several hundred stuck in the snow and rescued with military band-wagons (right word for the vehicle or??) We usually call them "tracked vehicles." The USA Army doesn't have a similar vehicle in inventory at the moment, but the Canadians do. There is an expression in English to "Get on the bandwagon," but that literally refers to a trailer hauling a band of musicians. Tank or other armor crewmen are referred to as "treadheads."
