G.T.Subie Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 I am planning a trip to Rhode Island with my wife next month and I am looking for some nice places to stay and some things to do. I was considering staying at the Black Duck INN. Anyone have some ideas or places to stay. Denial is your best friend
fatbastard Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 The wife and I have gone here a few times: http://castlehillinn.com/ It is nice but pretty pricey. We usually go on one of the packages that includes two nights and one dinner at their place. Food is really good and the people are very nice but it is a couple miles away from the downtown area.
RobE Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 dont do it. rhode island in the winter time? http://newenglandsubarus.com/
G.T.Subie Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 dont do it. rhode island in the winter time? No, we were thinking more like early April. Denial is your best friend
hondas123 Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 I don't live in RI...but I am familiar with some nice areas... 1. Newport (Tour the mansions on Bellvue Ave...also a very nice drive along the ocean. Great Harbor area, good shopping) 2. Jamestown (Small island off of Newport, scenic and worth the drive over the Jamestown Bridge) 3. Narragansett (Great Beaches) 4. Providence. Great downtown area, google "Fire-walk", it might be running in April. 5. Block Island (take a ferry from Narragansett) I'm sure others will chime in, but those are some of the more popular destination in RI. - The Mortgage Man
froggert Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 took the gf to newport last year and stayed at the chanler. pricey, but a great place if you like being attended to. i'd recommend stopping at their bar or restaurant (the spiced pear) for a burger. it's possibly the best burger i've ever had. i don't think everything will be open in early april as it's a little early for tourist season. most things open up end of april..

He pretty much nailed it---but try googling "water-fire" its the worlds fist art sculputure that flows through the whole city--attracts thousands every year--I still dont get it.
gianspi Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 ^ I'm surprised they call it a "sculpture". They basically burn logs through the river, lighting up the city. WaterFire centers on a series of 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. The string of fires illuminates nearly two-thirds of a mile of urban public spaces and parks, and residents and visitors gather to stroll along the river while listening to a memorable and eclectic selection of classical and world music that serves as a melodic accompaniment to the normal sounds of urban life. The fires are tended from sunset to past midnight by black-clad performers in boats who pass quietly before the flames. There are no admission charges to WaterFire. http://www.waterfire.org/ enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.

That's what it is...."water-fire"....not "fire-walk". Thanks. Here's a link http://www.waterfire.org/ - The Mortgage Man
G.T.Subie Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 Thanks for the all the suggestions guys. Keep them coming if you have more ideas. Denial is your best friend
Garandman Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 The Submarine museum in Groton is cool and you can tour the Nautilus. I'd propose Mystic Seaport as well but it's in the Nutmeg state.....but less than 10 miles from the border. There are some vineyards but I don't think April is the best time of year for a vineyard tour. Good time to visit Newport as it's not so crazy busy. Who Dares Wins スバル
elle Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 if you do newport in the winter, visit their website. You can get a package that includes free visits to the mansions and other great goodies. Its a great deal!

I think Castle Hill always includes tickets to teh mansions, last time the wife and I went in November since she wanted to see the mansions decorated for the holidays.
LongHiway Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Bring some $. RI has got some of the best restaurants around, and I'm from MA.
G.T.Subie Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Still doing some planning, I appreciate alll the help. Denial is your best friend
legacy_y_tu Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Bring some $. RI has got some of the best restaurants around, and I'm from MA. Yes we do, thanks very much !! In fact I just ate at a place called Prime steakhouse in Providence, RI. If you go into Providence I would highly recommend it. They've got phenomenal steaks, mostly shipped in from Chicago. Be aware though that some/many of their specials are pricey and the waiter doesn't always rattle off the price when he's describing the specials. Eg; one of their 38oz porterhouse steaks is $140 . This restaurant is in a section called Federal Hill. You can't go wrong really with the restaurants located up there. There's also good places in Newport, but honestly it's been a while since I've been down and am having trouble remembering names. Eh, sucks to get old! Too bad you are not going in Summer. Newport rocks in the summer. The bars are really hopping and you can take charter boat tours of the bay on 100 ft sailing sloops or catamarans.

Another Phenominal steak house is the new Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Prvoidence--its right on the water fire walk---expensive as all he** but well worth the melt in your mouth meat.
G.T.Subie Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Going up to Rhode Island this Friday. Staying at the Black Duck Inn in Newport. How far is Providence from Newport, we love steak. Denial is your best friend
chutracheese Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Pretty funny thread...I am up from VA visiting the inlaws for Easter. I am actually in Newport now. There are a lot of really fun things to do. Visit the mansions...especially The Breakers. There were some free tours this weekend and might be next weekend also. Visit newportmansions.org While there get down to Thames street for the shopping. Everthing isn't quite open yet but still fun to walk around. There is a ship building school that is really cool to check out. Do you play tennis? The International Tennis Hall of Fame is in Newport. There are a lot of interactive displays and some cool stuff if that kind of thing interests you. Go to the Black Pearl for a cup of chowder. Might be the best I've ever had. Tons and I mean tons of great bars too. Providence is about 40 minutes away. Unfortunately Water-fire doesn't start up until about mid May. It is awesome though. Great community activity. They pipe music through the river area and a lot of vendors sell food and spirits. Very, very cool and fun. Hope you have a great time.
