carnut114 Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Hello , My legacy wagon has an oil smell after your drive it shut it off and walk by the front of the car. At first somebody told me the passenger side inner cv joint is located to close to the catalytic converter. It dries out the inner cv joint boot then cracks and sprays grease onto the converter thus burning smell. Mine boot it perfect. I noticed the transmission was leaking onto the top of the exhaust. I fixed the leak then cleaned the exhaust off but it still has the smell. I can't tell where it is coming from. Has anyone had this problem before? Eric
Bdubs Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Oh yeah, I've got that problem. Its the rear main seal. Slowly leaks right onto the exhaust when the car is idle or when its run and is just shut off. Its done it now for almost 4 years, and it still isn't burning any oil, however I've never gotten used to the smell. Just don't feel like paying to have it fixed.
jonklein611 Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 The other thing to check, is there's a like $3 O-ring on the backside of the engine, these can leak over time, we replaced this part in my car, and the smell went away. If you had a CV joint go, you'd know it, mine went and it def made a mess everywhere.
SLegacy99 Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Did you look around the engine bay? A ruptured cam seal will shoot oil into your wheel wells. A cracked valve cover will drip oil down underneath the block.
dplacen Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Baffle plate? My car needs one too. I haven't had the time to do it.
88whitecat Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Hey, not to hijack, but Slegacy99, you mentioned the cam seal will shoot oil out to the wheel wells, what about the crankshaft seal? I have an oil leak from behind the timing cover. it doesnt fly anywhere it just flows down and spreads over the bottom of the engine and exhaust, whare it burns off.

Hmmm....could be a possibility I guess. Im not really sure.
jonklein611 Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I think we had that changed out, these lil $5 o rings get ya sometimes. I'll have to check the records and see what all we actually changed, but that does sound familiar.
