Ran the car again at Las Vegas Speedway, long!

Well, since my car has 3300 miles on it, and my friend did another mod to his vette, he dragged me out to the track again. I now have a Kartboy short shifter, K&N drop in filter, and a Perrin solid Up-pipe in the car, so actually no one had to drag me. Luckily it was nice and cool out 60 degrees and only about 300 people at the track, which equated to 4 runs in about an hour and half. I decided to not to try to slip the clutch like crazy as last time and see what my car would do, and I was happy with the results. First off the short shifter made my shifting right on and easy, man the Kartboy is awesome for slamming the gears fast, and some poeple complain that it is too notchy. Man you don't notice that at all when rowwing through the gears real fast, it just feels like solid positive engagement. Second off, it felt like the clutch was grabbing real well now, probably since it is broken in now, as before you could smell a little burnt clutch after every run, and I didn't smell anything this time. I actually revved to 5000rpms and dropped the clutch on each run, and the car seemed to handle it like it was meant to be driven this way. I know a lot of people would say I'm gonna blow up the tranny, but I really feel that the new tranny that has been reinforced according to Subaru can handle it! Plus I was getting a light amount of wheelspin on the front and rear tires. It would slip the fronts just a tad, and give me a nice rear wheel chirp, and it would take off like a banshee. On the start I blew ahead two car lengths against a WRX, new EVO, 2000 Corvette and of course a ricey Civic that ran a whopping 16.99 at 83mph. I guess his fart cannon didn't help him too much. The Vette caught me and beat me by 4 car lengths, same as the EVO, and I smoked the WRX with 4 car lengths, he had a catback and intake according to him, and he was real impressed with the Legacy. My launching is getting much better, and I averaged a .583 reaction time. Man, I can't wait for the TBE and Accesstuner. I probably would have smoked every car I ran against. I thought for sure the EVO would be neck and neck at the launch, and he said he had a good launch. I guess the reaction time was the key. I was annoyed that the car would roll backwards at the staging lights, so I had to use the handbreak on every launch. First ran against the Vette, I got a 14.235 at 97.40, 2.040 60', perfect run, great catapult launch, and good shifting. He ran a 13.7 and he had slicks on. Now this was sitting through 20 minutes of idle time getting into the track, so I thought for sure the second run would be better, and I did have a good time to sit and let the motor cool. Come to the staging lane, I revved to 5000 but as soon as the lights hit, I accidently let the motor down to 4000rpms, then launched and pulled UP on the handbreak like an idiot! Then I got distracted by dropping the rpms, so I said "DOUGH!" before I launched and tried to rev to 5000, then I wasn't thinking and locked the rear brake for a moment before I realized what I did and finally let go. Man I bogged hard, but still jumped that Civic, the car felt real strong too and still pulled a 14.770 at 96.91. Man I looked like a Monkey *ucking a Football. I was sure that this would have been my best time if I didn't jack the car up on the launch. Ok sat a while and tried to remember, push down on the gas pedal and push down on the handbreak, push down on the gas pedal and push down on the handbreak! Racced the EVO and got a 14.412 at 94.69mph, accidently only revved to 4000rpm and bogged a little on the launch. Then ran back to back and got a 14.711 as they were closing the track. This felt like a real good launch but felt like the car was a little tired at this point. So I am real happy with the numbers, didn't have to fry my clutch to run fast by slipping the crap out of it, and I found that Vegas time slips are not corrected for altitude of 2200ft. That means corrected I ran a 13.870 at 100mph, and when I got that 13.982, it equated to a 13.624 at 103.47mph. Man this car is pretty freakin fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the first car that I ever owned that actually exceeded my expectations when it came to performance. I have never been able to get a vehicle to run stock as fast as the car magazine guys do, and now I am running faster.

Yeah, I figure once the car starts to fall apart then I will trade for another. Hell, if I keep beatin on it like this I will need a new car next year in January! Sorry, I don't have a video camera, as I would like to post that, that would be sweet. There is a guy running mid 13's, with video on this site, but he has a boost controler on his car and runs like 17lbs of boost. I did have the local Subaru club witness my 13.9 run though but I guess that has nothing to do with this site.

My car is the one with 17 psi, but at the time I raced it boost was only 15 psi, or a whopping 1.5 psi *max* over stock. I've also documented that raising the boost really doesn't make all that much difference because this tiny turbo doesn't make power for long in 1st or 2nd anyway. Only with a new turbo will extra boost make a night & day difference in 1/4 mile times. Also, don't put much stock in those correction formulas. They are not as applicable for a turbo car. I've watched quite a few people over the years as they ran their car at "regular" altitudes for the first time and didn't do anything near their estimated "corrected" times. At the most, plan on 1-2 tenths and 1-2 mph. *No* LGT is going to trap 103-104 mph on the stock turbo no matter what mods you do, nevermind a stock car. If you drop the clutch at 5k rpm a few more times, you're going to see your tranny innards up close & personal.

I dont know john... When I had my WRX the diffrence between stock and STG II was around 5mph.. Trapping around 101. It would not be unreasonable to expect a 5mph increase with just breathing mods. The Turbo on the WRX was even tinyer. Tapering off to 9-10 psi by redline.

Then I wonder what it will give for a stage 2 package for this car!? Well, I have blown up 3 different transmissions in cars that I have had. One in my 88 Mustang GT, One in my Turbo GMC Sierra, custom turbo, and one in the 03 Vette. Gave me a forced excuse to get a built tranny in all of those cars. Par gear makes heavy duty units for this tranny also, and Xcceleration sells them for $2000 a piece. That one is setup for 450 ftlbs and is setup for 6000rpm drops and drag racing, using heat treated Helical cut gears and super heavy duty bearings, with hardeneded shifter rods, shafts. That is the one that I want. Well, I might just be your guys guinee pig on this one. According to Norrie Anderson of Par tranny's, this is the same transmission used in the Infinity FX45 that has a 315 hp 323 lbtq V8 and weights 4370lbs I have done about 200 5000rpm drops on this car now, some times with a loaded car, and the tranny feels as tight as when I got it. In every car that I had before, I could tell when the tranny was going, by how it would work, they give tall tale signs usually. But if not, I report to you guys what killed it!

200 takeoffs from 5k rpm!!!! Now I don't feel so guilty about my ~ 10 drag passes. RobY - I knew I shouldn't say *no* LGT will ever do it because somebody's going to resurrect this thread in 2-3 years and laugh at our comparitive ignorance of the platform. It may be able to see 103-104 but it's going to take a miracle. I'll be able to make a more exact statement once I get an up pipe & test it out at the track at 17 psi.

Yeah, I think the tranny is pretty freakin strong compared to the other Subaru models, but I have to be realistic and remember that my Vette tranny shitted out on me without much clue. I know it was going, but one time hard I stepped on it, and it broke the teeth off of the 3rd gear ring. I am real surprized with the clutch in this thing though. It grabs like glue and catapults my car forward. If I slip clutch it or drop the clutch from 5000rpms, I seem to get the same performance from it. I know that slipping is much safer, but it is really hard for me to get any consistancy. I ran all over the place the first time on the track trying to get used to it. The clutch drop is easy as hell, and I did that all the time in the Vette and Mustang. The Mustang lasted 80,000 miles until I supercharged it, then it blew nasty, but 120 more hp can do that I guess, especially with slicks. Same on the Vette, after I did a head and cam swap on it, and was running about 450hp, the tranny blew fast too, and lasted 33,000 miles before having any problems. I don't think that this tranny in the LGT will last very long either once I get the turbo back exhaust and tune. Will it last in my nearly stock form?????? I try to drive the car normal, but I live in a remote part of town with lots of curves and stop signs, and the car is such a blast to drive, so different and new to me with AWD and Turbo, just like my GMC pickup, I loved the custom Turbo, but that got stolen! I mean I hope that the tranny takes everything I throw at it, and I don't want to blow $2000 on a new tranny, but you pay to play, and I have payed my ass off for 18 years of driving fast now. The only good thing is that I have 4 vehicles, so when one goes down, I am never stuck without transportation. Man I need to spend my money on something else, like a cheaper hobby! I already put $4500 away for mods to this car. I havent' done new rims and tires yet, cause that would eat most of the money, I want more power first, then I will work on suspension and what not.

Yeah, at 2000 rpms my car used to stutter a bit when accelerating. I used to rev it up to at least 2500rpms before taking off to avoid it. When I put the up-pipe in, that went away! The car feels like it is starting to make boost at 2000rpms now, and feels like full power is on by 2500rpms. The car drives more like a V6 now with the new catfree piping. I can start accelerating at 1500 rpms now, where before I stalled it a few times or bogged it from a standstill. I tell you the up-pipe is a must in just to improve drivability. The enjoyment factor in cruising around in this car has gone way up since I did that and the short shifter. Stock tires and 91 octane gas. They don't have higher out here in Vegas unless you get 100 race gas!

Hodgeee, That's interesting, a buddy here in LA just put on the Perrin Uppipe and he said the same thing. That is, that the stuttering has pretty much vanished now. He also said that boost comes on 200-300 rpm's sooner than before. I'd guess I'm going to have to drive his car back to back with mine to compare how the Uppipe feels. Did you put yours in yourself or pay to have it done? If you paid to have it done, what did you pay for the pipe and install? thanks

Installed myself and posted about it. Not really really hard, but a lot of bolting on and off was required, and I had problems with bolts being stripped from the factory and my install took like 5 hours. Now after doing it, I know I can do it in about 2 hours now if no problems are ran into!

Average between $100 to $200, pipe that goes from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo, eliminates the cat converter in there, that is real restrictive to gas flow. This allows the turbo to spin faster and boost sooner due to the exhaust gases not getting slowed up before hitting the turbo.
