Highway Gear Whine?

Hey gang -

I have noticed a whine in the car lately that only kicks in over 40 mph.

It has gotten really quite loud, to the point that it overwhelms any other noise at highway speeds. Anyone else notice this?

It seems to have appeared since January, when two things happened:

1. It got quite a bit colder in Iowa.

2. I went TDC stage 2.

2005 LGT 5MT

It is mostly an annoyance, but it certainly leves me a bit concerned about the status of the trans and diffs. I am going to change the fluids in those before too long to see if it helps, and also to see if they are full of metal shavings...:(

Happened to me too, they are replacing the center diff under warranty, I hope!

Search a bit, a few others have had the same problem:

-speed dependant?

-same noise no matter what gear?

-clutch in clutch out, no difference?

Yes - gets louder and higher pitched with increased speed

-same noise no matter what gear?

Not sure - I will definitely check that out.

No difference.

Center Diff, huh. Doesn't sound promising. :(

Well, I guess it must be diff related, because I confirmed today that it is independent of gear and also is the same with clutch in or out.

Fortunately, it is currently just a minor nuisance. I will update the thread when I have the dealer check it out.

I will bet you have the same problem as I did.

That also describes a bad wheel bearing, which has been a very common failure on the 2005 cars. Search the Warranty/Repairs area for "wheel bearings" or "humming noise".

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!
