I found that, but it seems like it has a dvd slot underneath it..... looks like custom fab it is!

That's the factory bezel and the "dvd slot" is for the factory navigation system's buttons.

Also since most carPC screens are 7" and I believe the factory screen was 6.5", the factory navigation bezel isn't going to work.

I am installing my first car pc

I am planning to purchase this

http://store.mp3car.com/Direct_Fit_Double_Din_LCD_Touch_Screen_for_2005_S_p/dsh-020.htm

as opposed to trying to custom make the bezel in the standard oem spot.

My first question is does anybody here on this board custom make bezels/lcd to put in that spot?

My second question is that if i get this computer...

http://store.mp3car.com/Morex_Bundle_Mobile_Car_Computer_System_p/ccc-204.htm

and I mount it under the passenger seats are the usb cables going to be too long so that it causes signal loss and can have a negative impact on the entire system.

Thank you so much for the help and any further advice would be most appreciated.

also does anybody on the forum sell bezels that I can put up top in the cubby for oem factory nav spot? or where could I buy a bezel like that?

You should just buy my CarPC in my FS thread ;) lol

Already has the custom fabbed stuff and all the cables.

If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.

I missed this post, sorry :p

That bezel will NOT work for a GT. That will only work on a 2.5i because they have single zone climate controls with knobs. You cannot custom fab the controls in there either because the actual climate controls are built into the radio unit itself. It's quite an involved process.

Dont worry about cable length, you wont have any issues running the wires all the way from the back of the trunk. Degredation doesnt play an issue here.

If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.

My CarPC is a laptop mounted over the spare tire. I have a USB cable running from the laptop to a passive hub in the dashboard, which connects to my Tactrix cable, USB display, WBO2, and a cable that's accessible from the cabin, for thumb drives and occasionally a keyboard.

And just for completeness... the laptop's other USB port goes to powered hub, which connects to the power-hungry stuff: bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS.

ok cool thank you guys for all of your advice. I am very appreciative.

if i decide to buy this

http://www.fastwrx.com/lenavscbe.html

how do you guys recommend I paint it black to match the dash? for under a 100 bux its a good buy assuming that it is as described able to fit a 7 inch screen and assuming I can relocate or modify the bezel to fit the lcd info display.

Anyone have experience and know how fast they ship by chance?

thanks again

btw Executor485 you have a pm regarding your car pc

I picked up a used stock cubby bezel from the local parts yard, and am playing with it now. I've got it cut up a little, and am trying to figure out exactly how to mount the 7" touch screen in to it. I figure I can practice with the $29 piece, and do it again on my real piece if I need to.

But I've also got to re-locate the info pod, and am too cheap to pay for the bracket to put it where the ashtray is.

I seem to recall the factory screen being smaller than "standard" car PC screens. I put "standard" in quotes because there are different sized 7" LCD screens depending on what brand you buy.

I personally wouldn't buy the factory nav bezel and get the standard cubby bezel instead.

I think this is the part: http://www.subaruparts.com/cart/?pn=66060ag05a but check with them before you order.

You'll have to cut it up and fabricate it to fit your screen. I would use the front of the plastic housing that your screen comes in.

I find http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip to be a suitable match to the dash with a soft rubberized feel to it.

I was researching the cubby touchscreen + carpc threads, and I was also looking to get a new phone. I thought to myself the new Motorola Photon that comes out at the end of the month has docking features. Mainly you can connect a mouse, monitor and keyboard to the photon basically making it a little computer. My original option was to do the touchscreen in cubby and run wires to a carpc from mp3car in trunk. From there I would connect GPS, wireless card, bluetooth, and whatever. But then I thought with this phone I wouldnt need to do all that. Rather than tether my phone to the carpc for gps and what not, I could just run the phone straight to monitor and just use the phone as the computer. Its simpler and less prone to theft because when you leave the car you take your phone. The main things I need from the carputer are , music, navigation, bluetooth and internet. The phone will cut costs cause I plan to get it regardless but it would also do all the jobs of the carputer. no software needed. Then I realized it runs on android and I would need android software to get my ecu tunes. So I made this thread to get some more input about how I could work the ecu into the phone. When the phone comes out and I get my hands on one I will add more information in a better write up. If I can get my vag-com cable to work with the phone and some android flash software for logging and whatever we would be set. Then I figured you only flash the ecu so many times so maybe its not neccessary for the phone to take care of it. Let me know what you guys think about this idea!?!?!?! I might be onto something.

so if i was going to do the GPS on the bottom (attached to the AC and everything) - i would have to do it myself? or could i pay someone

(if i bought this http://www.avojdm.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=H6217AG911&x=10&y=16 - would i have to buy a "system" and install it myself?)

is it easier and cheaper just to put the GPS/NAVI in this part of the car http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/car-pc-52252.html

Does your car have manual or automatic climate control?

After years of trying I have just about had it with CarPC. I cannot believe what a retard I was for ever going down this path. Guys, buy a commercial solution - do not piece it together yourself. When it breaks - and it is guaranteed to break - it is YOU who will have to fix it. As an aside, if you do get a CarPC, buy the ready-assembled automotive-minded units from MP3CAR.com

In the last 4.5 years doing this I've done and hacked bodywork and PC cases and cursed more than any of you CarPC-wise. I just dropped 520 on something readily assembled, tested and warrantied from MP3CAR. And yes, there is a difference. I guess due to repeated failiures I gained anough proficiency with regards to the software to have a decent final product on the software side and by sticking to Intel-based products, I could just move the old Win XP n-lite / CF3.1 / IG4 / GMPC over to the new mo-bo and fix the drivers, boot.ini and the GUI.

But I am so done with hacking boxes, adding switches, soldering wires etc. It is a phucking money pit, nothing better evidenced by the fact that I wasted another 520 on it. I will never again do a CarPC project. In the long run it is more money (twice $$$ - so far for me) and countless man-hours wasted then what an AVIC-N1 would have cost back in 2007.

What happened? Thats why I'm waiting for the Motorola Photon to try a phone/carpc, it has docking, you can hook up monitor, mouse and keyboard and use it like a laptop. If I can get a windows OS on there I might be onto something. My carpc would be my cell phone , simple , sweet and mobile. Not only is it more durable. It has everything in one device, music, video, 4g internet, bluetooth, navigation all in something palm sized! Car pcs are played out! This is the future boys! I'm gonna make this shit happen. If Centrafuse would get their software working properly that would resolve many of the problems. It's damn near the cost of the OS but full of bugs. RoadRunner is better but with so many people contributing to it it is inevitable that you'll install something that screws it all up.

Hardware wise things aren't much better. In the OEM world, all the Navi system functions are integrated into one nice little box under the seat. In the aftermarket, you're stuck with sticking little boxes for various functions all over your car and going crazy with USB cords all over the place. Recipe for disaster, IMO.

There's a reason OEM systems cost $2000+. They work.

My friend has a Hyundai. OEM radio plays music from his iPod, mutes it when a call comes in, the bluetooth works properly, etc...

The boys over at Centrafuse are still stuck on trying to get the BlueSoleil to stay activated.

F1 I went back and forth on the carpc. I've been building my own PC since '95 and still build my own gaming rigs. So I figured I should make a carpc and it would just have a cool wow factor. Then I started doing reseach and adding things up. I found that it seemed like it would be more trouble then it's worth. I went with on of those $279 double-din 7" touchscreen in dash dvd, radio, tv, sd card reader, bluetooth for calls and streaming music, usd , and ipod setups. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/here-myebay-279-shipped-dash-7-nav-bluetooth-dvd-usb-161236.html It pretty much a carpc. It has a 400mhz cpu, 64 mb of ram and runs Windows CE 5.0 and no problems so far for $279 shipped.
