New GT500....Is this right?

Recommended Posts

Do the rear axles snap when you put a set of drag radials on it? I remember the '03/04 Mach 1 Mustangs would snap their axles with a set of drag radials. What size axle is the new GT500 using, if I remember correctly the Mach 1's were using 27 or 28 spleen axles.

"Spleen" We all have one. But, I think you mean "spline"

In the first model run of GT500's that seemed to be the case. Most were only putting down 385-395 to the wheels.

Nothing like that American home cookin......

Lately though on the newest released cars the #'s are in the 425-435 range.

There is no IRS in the GT500 so the problems the 03/04 Cobra's had does not apply;)

No problems @ all throwing a set of drag radials on the car. From what I understand though the aftermarket is being severely limited due a few cdhanges FORD opted to do:rolleyes:

If getting screwed out of 65k is not bad enough.......

A buddy of mine is a Ford tech and they just got one and PDI'd it in. I guess the techs weren't overly impressed...seems like a lot of hype, a couple hundred in mods and a Cobra would be right on the same level for less $.

i guess ill chime in, just letting you all know, my best friend has an 03 cobra, modded like crazy. he is pushing like 550 hsp at the wheels, and i think around 675-700 at the crank. last time we went to the track, he ran an 11.79 with me in the car on stock tires, that was his first run, but they wouldnt let him come back because in fl, you have to have a roll cage, 5pt harness etc.. if you are running those numbers, and he is just stock seatbelt. haha, kinda funny. the hardest part he says is not the launch, but 2nd and 3rd gears. he says he usually just feathers 1 to get out of the whole, but second and third you want to just floor it and you cant, you have to ease into it.

he is waiting to put a set of drags on her to see what she will do, im guessing in the 10s if he can get the power down to the ground.

but he has never had any problems when doing heavy launches.

nope, completely stock IRS suspension in the rear. I dont know what to tell you other then he runs an 11.79 on stock tires, and i know for a fact he hasnt done any suspension mods to it, so i guess it can take it. The true test will be when he puts slicks on there to see what it will do. maybe with the stock tires, there is TOO much power to weight ratio to break anything??

My brother is a big mustang guy and there is alot of talk on forums that it's not producing 500hp. Similiar to the 32 valve Cobra that was shy on published numbers.

This is why Mustangs get pwned by european and japanese cars. They ALWAYS overstate horsepower. People are stupid enough to believe it.

He better have an IRS brace because if he wheel hops and keeps his foot in the throttle, then it will snap. If he runs a set of slicks though, he has lower chance of snapping the axle, but I'd never risk it.

ALWAYS is a bit overstated. The regular GTs actually are underated as evidence by stock dynos. For the money (purchase pice, not sticker price) the Mustang rarely if ever gets "pwned" by imprt brands. Ford has many times had issues with overrating the cobras, stupid mistake on there part, IMHO. Underrate a Focus or Escort, no one is going to check, underrate your top Mustang offering, it will get slapped on a dyno.:icon_cool

I just don't prefer muscle cars. Wasted gas, and plus I like the sound of turbos and smaller engines. Mustangs even stock I think are obnoxious.

Fair enough, for a daily driver, I too prefer the small turbo engines (that is why I drive the Leggacy), but nothing will ever beat the sound of a big american v8 rumbling down the street (except maybe a ferrari v12 at full boogie :icon_bigg )

Import engines own American engines as far as sound is concerned. American engines are generally just too loud for my taste. I love the rumble of a Ferrari or Lambo. The V10 M5/M6 is phenomenal.

As much as I love the Italians, nothing gets me like the sound of a American V-8. Both the GM small block & the Ford Modular make the sweetest music. I won't even get into older Big Blocks with lumpy cams & no mufflers.

So I was at Club Five in DC this weekend and Chris Warren (former NFL player with the Seahawks and Cowboys) pulls up in a Lamborghini Gallardo with rims that are black w/ a polished lip and yellow Lambo brake calipers. Needless to say, it was sick. He opens the Lambo style doors and everyone just flocks to this car. He proceeds to rev the engine and boasts of 900 horsepower. I thought to myself, this guy is full of crap. I mean don't get me wrong Lambo's are very nice, but 900 horsepower? I don't think so. I asked him where the supercharger was and he completely ignored me. LOL Those things have 520 horses stock. He even showed me the engine. No supercharger to be found. :-) What an idiot.

I heard a Lambo with an aftermarket exhaust at the Unique Performance Show here a few months back, sounded like complete poo IMHO. Although I doubt the 900hp there are a few twin turbo'd Gallardos running the streets that do have those power levels.

This thing was definitely NOT twin turbo'd. I know the sight and sound of turbo (obviously). He even had his rear hood popped showing the engine off. (No turbo to be found)
