rc0032
Get one of these from PepBoys (~$50) or go and they will read it for free http://www.ground-z.org/electronics/vehicle/obd002.jpg
mickeyd2005
I would be surprised if you can find a OBDI scanner with the correct Subaru connector for $50. Your best bet is to go to PepBoys and ask them to scan it for you. I know that there are some model specific OBDI scanners for Ford and GM And Honda that are cheap, but I haven't seen a Subaru one yet. The one that rclark is showing appears to be an OBDII scanner. The Actron CP9150 with OBDI cables is like $250. http://actron.com/xcart/files/d_4_01.jpg http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0007LEG2K.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ

Jon in CT
Under the dash on the driver's side you'll find two green single-wire connectors. Connect them and then turn the key to the ON position (engine not running). Observe the flashes from the CEL. The number of long flashes is the 10s digit followed by the number of short flashes representing the units digit. For example, three long flashes followed by two short flashes indicates trouble code 32 (Oxygen sensor).

Osei
See if you can find either a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your year. They have a list of most trouble codes inside. I have an 04, so my list wouldn't help. Amazon.com for mail order . O.

So you got a 35 trouble code. I wasn't too far off. For future reference, the page at http://www.psi3.co.uk/downloads/faultcodes.pdf has a large collection of Subaru trouble codes and their meanings (sometimes cryptic) for both OBD-I and OBD-II
