BigT
While I've been driving around lately I've been noticing a lot of chargers. Not the super cool srt-8 or even the hemi, just the base models. Can't help but think that if Subaru made a super duper bad ass legacy it would boost sales. The Sti boosted impreza sales. I remember discussing something similar in a thread about a year ago. Someone made the argument of the corvette helping to sell chevy cars because it was something that provided image for the company or something. Just though I'd post it. I KNOW SOA reads these. godwhomismike
they're being used as rental cars - my uncle is using one right now while the RX-330 is in the shop. I like it but on the same token find it kinda bland
jaymesbry
That would work, except people dont perceive the Legacy as a sporty car.. they think of typically like wagons or outbacks.. utilitarian vehicles.. once the Legacy Image is rectafied.. (like what we're doing on this site) then defintely we'll be in good shape
crazyjay1089
Exactly... if they don't think of Legacys as sporty cars, then make a super sporty one so that they're forced to change their opinion. An STI Legacy isn't all too far fetched. It would need to be flashier and quicker than the GT version, but still priced under the $40k mark. However this puts the Legacy square in the market of more prestigious brands...

The Corvette works as Chevrolet's halo car partially because it is a unique platform. Four door sedan halo cars are non-sequiturs. The last real halo car Subaru built was the SVX. Exclusive platform (I think), Italian styling, high price and low production! It didn't last. The Legacy GT is the upmarket variant of the Legacy 2.5i. A hot-rod Legacy would be a tough business case to sell.

Absolutely right. Now in the age of HP arms race, it's just necessary. It's silly that WRX STI is the only Subaru halo car. Check my sig and let SOA know directly. They DON'T read our forums. John M
A sporty coupe with a TT H6 would undercut the upcoming Skyline by almost half price. I know a lot of people who want a turbo AWD car but don't want it in 4 doors. Right now, the only way to get that is buy a decade-old DSM or 3S car. Infamous1
My friend has a Charger, very bland without exterior mods. He now has 22" wheels, which should be a requirement for those from the factory. Totally improves it looks.
Brady
First off: > Other Cars and Other Cars VS. Legacy Second off: The Charger has a bold style the Legacy doesn't. You could give a Legacy 500 horsepower, Better brakes, 20" wheels, a full interior treatment (with Nav of course) a new 7 Speed manual or SMG transmission with handling that puts an Elise to shame ... and it wouldn't sell any more 2.5i Legacies. Why? Because a Legacy 2.5i would still look like a Legacy. Americans as a general populace don't look at cars the same way a Subaru enthusiast sees them. I like my somewhat bland, yet tasteful and only slightly sporty sedan. It looks good, but not flashy. It's exactly what I want. If the Legacy had a wild body like the Charger, I'd be driving something else. The Legacy just won't sell in high doses unless they make it something it's not. AirSix
This is how Ford nearly ruined the Mustang. Too many versions at varying prices with way too many options all across the model line. I don't believe the USDM Legacy will ever reach the performance pinnacles of it's European and JDM siblings due merely to market share facts. The Subaru badge does not elicit an image of a stout, well performing, luxurious sports sedan in the minds of most stupid American auto buyers. Hell, I had never so much as looked at a Subaru lot as I passed by until I really started doing in-depth research of the available sport sedans on the market for MY05. And even then, I expected to see some new and improved BRAT sitting on the lot when I walked in (and BINGO! There was a freakin Baja...meh). I don't think the average schmuck buyer does that kind of research and consequently SOA marketeers know who and what they're marketing to. But alas, the Subaru cult following is our saving grace with bounds of aftermarket items and sites like this that have borne engineering feats before our very eyes. I tell myself that an N/A Forester is just an STI without all the fluff like, power, handling, style, racing heritage, and curb appeal.
