washburn33
I just put on my AVO turboback and I think I have an exhaust leak. Should I tighten the bolts when it is cold because it will grow when it gets hot or tighten them when its hot because the metal is more malleable and will compress when I tighten down on it. PGT
where's the leak? on the DP, or midpipe?
washburn33
When kneeling down next to it in the parking lot it sounds like the uppipe, but I don't know for sure. You have an AVO, don't you? Did you have any exhaust leaks?
subiesales05gt
if its the uppipe then i would go with the bolts from crucial. they are suppose to work really well and once tightened wont come loose. for now just tighten the shite out of them. just dont bust a bolt. Waxiboy
When kneeling down next to it in the parking lot it sounds like the uppipe, but I don't know for sure. You put a turbo back and you get a leak in the UP??? Also, did you use new gaskets?
PGT
I had an AVO catback on Cobb DP. I have re-used gaskets and had no issue, but would normally recommend new ones (just gets expensive when you keep changing parts out like I seem to do). Sounds to me like if you are hearing it up there, you need a second person to help. Shine a flashlight near the flanges (might need to turn the wheel and pull the fender liner) and rev the motor, while looking for a leak.
NHLEG
If it's the UP, it would be hard to hear at idle. Hop in the car, bring it up to about 3k in second gear and hit the gas. If it's the UP, you will know it...it's loud! UP leaks are easy to hear under boost. Also, I don't understand how installing a TB will cause an UP leak? If you're sure the sound is comming from the front of the car, check the manifold gaskets as well. I just replaced one of mine. Take the shielding off and look for soot. PGT
What you are hearing is probably more turbo noise and the wastegate. It sounds like a slight leak at first, but you get used to it.

washburn33
It sounds like a ticking noise. It is more prominent when I let off the gas.
PGT
seems normal from all the cars I've done. maybe borrow another set of Subaru owner's ears??
washburn33
I didn't have this ticking noise before I put the headers, uppipe and turboback exhaust on. What gives?
PGT
you went from three cats to one (or none) and SS headers instead of cast iron. It's going to sound different. Mine does. The STi we did the same work on changed ALOT with just the Gruppe-S coated header.
washburn33
I can smell exhaust gasses under the hood though.
PGT
well, that's good to know I'd say you have a leak! See post #7...you need help to track it down. Grab a flashlight and have someone rev the motor....or, look for carbon deposits. Should be evident after a few miles since the swap.
washburn33
The ticking gets quieter as the car heats up, but it is still very noticeable even when up to operating temperature.

PGT
I've got the same. I have a slight leak around one bolt on the block, but everything's torqued down snug and other than a bit of carbon, it's good. Perhaps the slipjoint? did you tighten it back up on install? The best way to find a look is carbon deposits.
