wiscogtlimited
I am currently on my third subie, and just picked up the 01 gt a month and a half ago. I have been noticing lately a distinct coolant smell when I get out of the car. Needless to say I am not too happy. I know that there was a t.s.b for the external head gasket leak that was serviced by the previous owner. SOA supposedly has a 100k mile warranty on the gaskets. THe car runs stellar and have had no evidence of overheating. I have been keeping an eye on the coolant level the last couple of fill ups. It is a bit low. THe wierd thing is that I just noticed that the reservoir level was up from yesterday. Wierd. The coolant does not smell like it has mixed with exhaust, like just before my 98 blew its gaskets. WTF.....is this still a problem with the 01's. I am confident that if it is a gasket it will be covered under the 100k mile SOA gasket warranty. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this. I am wondering if it is something stupid like a leaky hose. I am a long time subie guy, and if I have blown gaskets already on my third sub............that would suck. HELP ME PLEASE? ANY IDEAS? wiscogtlimited
Forgot to mention that my 01 gt limited has 71,000 miles on it.
dplacen
I've replaced head gaskets even on 2000 and up! Mostly for oil leaks and sometimes coolant leaks.

wiscogtlimited
I did hear back from the subaru dealer this morning. They did confirm that the head gaskets were shot, and did offer to take care of it under warranty. Good stuff, put my mind to rest. Â I decided that I would go ahead and replace the timing belt also, as well as the tentioner because the car has 71k miles on it. (105,000 recomended service) Â I have also noticed clutch shudder in my car (argggghhhhhhh) and due to the nature of the head gasket repair with the engine having to come out and all, I figured it would be best to replace the clutch, flywheel, and other odds and ends to prevent further shudder headaches. Â Total cost to me estimate is 954.00 parts and labor. Happy that subaru is paying for my damn head gaskets, not happy that I have to drop a grand in a car that I just got. Damn it..........oh well........it could have been worse I guess.

Jedi Pimp
Clutch shudder on 00-02 is a known issue there is a TSB about it and a new clutch part as well. And often on the these models the external coolant drip from cyl 4 on the exhaust manifold is solved by using the special Subaru cooling system conditioner "aka gasket sealer"
wiscogtlimited
I find it strange that subie put out a tsb asking to put in stop leak. Of course soa calls it something different, but stop leak, come on. The biatch was leaking and I got her patched up nicely for a grand, under warranty at 71k miles. Sweet. Yeah car basicly recieved 4 grand worth of work for a bit over a grand. I am more that pleased with the way that it all worked out. Of course I would like to have my thousand dollars back, but under the circumstances, it worked out alright. The car drives like new now, and the coolant odor is a thing of the past. I am taking the car back in on monday to have the clutch looked over again. It seems to have a clicking sound at the bottom of the clutch stroke when the car is warm. Was not there before so I am having it checked out. The dealership is being cool about everything. So far I am happy, about the way I have been treated.
