Carputer almost complete!

Hi All,

Just wanted to share my progress of installing a computer in my new LGT.

I bought a stock 2006 NAVI bezel to replace the cubby I had. Mounted my 7" Wide Touchscreen and fabricated a panel for where the navi buttons go. For now all that is there is a power/reset button.

Specs:

1ghz VIA Nano-ITX m/b

512mb DDR

60gig Notebook HD

m1-atx power supply, voltage regulator

GPS

Comments/questions?

Here are the pics. They suck because they were taken with my camera phone. The blue tape is painters tape so I wouldn't scratch up the bezel. It's currently in the car and I'll post more pics later.

Nice screen install! Do you have any close-up pics of your handy work?

Yea those IR leads are small as heck! It takes a lot of patience. After I did mine I wrapped it up in electrical tape so my messy soldering job on each lead wouldn't short the other leads.

well, i didn't do the handy work. i gave up and had a shop fabricate the rest of it because i was just getting too fed up. the 4 wire touchscreen is a joke, so i don't use it. if you can see it, i'm using a micro rollerball mouse. it works GREAT!

I was REALLY considering doing this. But, then I realized, everytime you get in your car, you'll have to wait 10 or 15 seconds for it to boot up :(

Get a RRAP and hook up the unlock line, then your accessory line will power up when you unlock the car, I figure there's at least 10 sec from unlock to turning over the car.

If that's not enough get a CF card HD, 256 mb ram and strip out a bunch of service. With hibernate that should get it to under 10.

mine takes a full minute, and I'm fine with that. Its not like you cant drive around or listen to FM until you see your roadrunner/mp3car or other program start.

the benefits grossly outweigh the disadvantages IMO

btw the 1 minute comes from a 1.3ghz itx form via epia, 512 ram, 100gb laptop harddrive, 90w m1-ATX, windows xp pro sp2 with almost no speed optimization. The only speed things that I have done is disable a few non-vital services.

there can be a problem btw about the whole RAAP thing.. with the pc rebooting when the power dips to start the car. Doesn't happen often, but if you plan to do it that way I'd recommend you wire in a capacitor.

yes, that's been most of my problems... having enough power to not reboot the car when i crank the engine. of course, i do not have a spiffy set up like some of you. this is off an OLD laptop Mobo. it SUCKS! :( but too much money already spent on this, so i'm using it til i get REALLY sick of it... oh well. it'll work for now. and really, i have a power button on the screen to boot the PC up when I want. it doesn't come on automatically because I find that annoying.

trdvibe... they make a regulator that you can put between your car and laptop power that will help with the reboots. there is one called Carnetix. You can find it over at mp3car.com, sometimes you'll stumble upon a used one too.

Why not use hibernate? I had it to ~10s resume on the same setup with 256 (AND 4200rpm drive).

What PS are you using? most of the newer DC-DC PSU/Starup controllers (M1/M2 atx or Opus) can handle down to about 6-6.5v input voltage (enough for a gas engine, and many diesels). What are you pulling off each rail?

RRAP = Retained/Resume Accessory Power by scottmcphee. It retains the accessory power (for radio, but it's easy to rewire the windows/sunroof to accessory) for user-settable time with a few options.

:munch:

This is inevitable for my vehicle.

Like Anderson says, I'm just watching and learning from you pioneers.

One of my questions to be answered is: do I want to just dock a laptop somewhere in the vehicle (docked and wired to a display, mouse, etc. like yours), so that as technology advances and laptops come and go, I can swap in new hardware quickly, or do I want to permanently install/mount the bare tower/desktop components as you lads are doing?

Keep up the great work!

Just curious - how much have you spent so far?

Any plans to hook into the ECU for real-time monitoring?

This computer was transplanted from my previous car, 2001 acura cl.

It was in the car for a year+, so i've forgotten exactly how much i've spent.

But you can probably start from square one and spend well under $1000 for a whole setup, plus misc. items.

For real-time monitoring, I purchased the hardware/software from digimoto.com that plugs into the obdII port and monitors from there.

I'm waiting for a new obdII scanner that is compatible with CAN vehicles.

$1K is a little out of my reach..

btw, digimoto says they are now CAN compatible - don't you get a free software upgrade?

well, I dont want to use hibernate because I dont trust myself and am worried that after leaving my car sitting in the garage for a long weekend, I'll come back to a dead battery, yes I know it will take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time for that to happen, but I like the "better safe than sorry" method, besides, its not that big of a deal to me.

I am using the m1-atx, it has a 15 second, 30 second or 30 minute delay jumper. That kind of annoyed me as I wanted 15 minutes. But I went with 30, and it has been just fine. (yes I know using a 30 minute run time is proablly worse than hibernate, but if I'm going in for more than 30 minutes I go ahead and shut down)

the M1 is designed to stand the power dips, but there are times when it just wont, it seems to happen the most if I've had the carputer on for several minutes with the radio on using the system, like waiting for someone in a store parking lot, when they come back out, starting the car makes the CPC reboot. Its been intermittant, I sometimes wonder if I dont have a large enough power wire, or maybe my relay is causing it or its just a power dip plain and simple, but it hasn't concerned me grealty as I try to avoid the situation and its been just fine.

btw, to anyone putting your carputer under the floor of the trunk, make sure you have good fans. I upgraded mine from the 2 stock like 14cfms to something like 35cfm each. Its a tiny bit louder (cant hear it when the cars on) and makes a huge difference in heat. Also, when building the holder, add support for the middle of the trunk heh, my trunk floor is sagging at the handle from having heavy equiptment on top of the trunk with no side to side supports. Just thought I'd mention that to anyone considering this idea hehe

my "phase I" carputer project cost me about $2000, but that includes a brand new computer from mp3car, operating system, GPS software and antenna (also new), new Xenarc 700TSV, factory cubby bezel, fiberlgass work and screen mounting, information center relocation bracket, and the wire harness fix that we sell. Phase II so far has cost me probablly going on $700 now, but thats because we're tryign to make something we can sell to others that dont want to do lots of R&D, if it were a 1 of a kind some silicone and screws and bondo would have done the trick for under $200 heh

The hardware I bought from them a couple of years ago, was not CAN compatible. I'm getting one of the newer units from them.
