Burning Smell

Recommended Posts

I just got my 2005 LGT two weeks ago and I am noticing a burning smell coming from the engine compartment when I drive it hard. Is this normal? I've enver had a turbo before, and I know they run hot, but I dont think this is right. The only other thing I can think of is that, when the dealer changed the oil before making delivery, they spilled a little on the engine and its burning off. Lemme know what u think. Thanks

Yes, this is a stock LGT. And the smell could definetly be described as an exhaust smell. COuld this have something to do with the stock Downpipe? I think I read something about the stock DP not having a wastegate or something like that.

It's normal, I get the smell when driving hard.

Yes, it's totally normal but should go away after a month or two. Your engine/drivetrain has lubricants etc. on it when it leaves the factory and they are simply burning off.

Just bought an '06 non-GT Legacy last weekend and it has a slight burnt smell. A different dealer where I test drove an '07 told me it was norma; and would go away after a while (he told me this during test drive, and I didn't smell anything until after we stopped and got out, so people must ask about it). He gave me the impression that it was oil or something on hot engine/exhaust parts, not clutch, but who knows. The point is that I think a slight burnt odor might not be abnormal on a new legacy.

when i first drove my 06 LGT, i wasn't used to the clutch. i've driven my friend's scion tc, honda civic, toyota celica, and acura tsx, and the LGT by far has the most sensitive clutch. the first 2 months i was burning my clutch here and there but now i have a good feel for it. i only smell burning when my friends try to drive my car... haha

When I drove my LGT off the lot last year there were all sorts of smells. Once I got used to the clutch engagement, that smell went away, but as soon as the vent/fan was tuned on, you got high. Went away after a few months.
ignore him, he'll go away.
