does the "wheel bearing problem" extend to other subaru models?

Recommended Posts

enjoying a good merlot and musing on my good fortune--including owning my LGT--it suddenly flashed upon me that maybe the bad wheel bearings that "plague" our legacies are also evident in other sube models from '05 or thereabouts.

do imprezas, foresters, etc. seem to have the failure-prone bearings, or is it just the legacy model?

thanks for any info, eljay

i'm way out of my depth . . .

All Subaru's

Early (98-2001) Forester's are the worst followed by early (98-2001) Outbacks and (98-2001) Impreza's.

The newer Legacy's are nowhere near the same numbers.

I had a 1998 Outback and replace both rear bearings right after 50,000 miles. First car I ever had to replace wheel bearings on. My Prelude had 168,000; Corolla SR-5 hit 200,000, Accord 80,000, Tercel 80,000, CRX-Si 95,000. lots of miles on other cars and no bad bearings. Weird. Crap I've driven a lot of miles in my life.

I dunno... in one of the 3 related threads in the Warranty area, someone suggested that the wheel bearings were totally a totally new design for the new LGT, so it shouldn't be related to older failures. But this is my first Subie, and can't verify that comment.

I wouldn't worry about it: if this is the biggest problem you have with your new car, you're doing just fine! It's an easy warranty claim, and even if you have to do it yourself, the bearings are less than $100 each and just an hour or two of labor. Besides... I haven't done a formal census or anything, but it seems like the issue is *mostly* limited to the early '05 models ('04 build dates), with perhaps a few flyers in the later cars. I've been paying attention to the threads on this and I think the count is at around 20 cars on this Forum now. That's not an insignificant number, but it's sure not a lot, either.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!

Usually, the wheel bearings of drive wheels are pressed, and not all that easy to install without hydraulic equipment. Is that not the case with Subies?

2005 and newer Legacy's (and possibly some of the other newer Subaru's) use a wheel bearing assembly front & rear that is bolt-in. No press necessary.
