Ever wonder what your modded (or stock) Subaru will do -- REALLY do -- but don't want to risk your driver's license? Come out to the track for a completely legal opportunity to drive your car to the limit! Oh, and you get to hang out with the Mach V staff and lots of other cool gearheads.

What: Mach V Track Event III

When: October 14-15, 2006

Where: Summit Point Raceway main course

We'll be doing this as part of a NASA "High Performance Driving Event" (HPDE). That means we don't have to worry about the logistics of running the actual event, but as a sponsor we get some perks. Those include a special Mach V pre-registration period, special Mach V paddock parking area so we can line up all the WR Blue cars next to each other ;), and a bit of publicity for Mach V Motorsports. Plus, for those of you who attend, we'll have some other fun stuff, like manufacturer parts giveaways.

If you're new to track driving, this is a great way to start! You can read up on the HPDE events at the NASA Mid-A home page. There are different classes based on your level of driving experience. You can drive any car, from WRX to Legacy to...well, if it can pass the tech inspection, you can drive it. And if you're not new to track driving, it's a well-run, action-packed event, with plenty of seat time and lots to see when you're not driving.

Cost is $310 for the weekend. You have to be a NASA member to participate; that's $40, but you get a free year's subscription to Grassroots Motorsports, which is more than worth it. You can sign up at the same time you register for the driving event.

Pictures of our first Mach V Track Event are here. We usually have about 30 WRXs and Evos, plus other fun friends-of-Mach V cars.

I hope to see you all there! Special Mach V pre-registration open now; see big link below.

Register here.

^ yes, as that's what NASA is out there to help you do, it's to provide you high performance driving event and help you learn what it's all about.

I will be instructing at this event (already signed up), not sure if I will be running my BMW or my GT.. but it's possible that I will be using my GT. Who knows, I might end up being your instructor ;)

Come out and enjoy the fun!

Is there a max # of participants/cars? How late can I sign up? I've got trials scheduled for Friday, 10/13/06 and Monday, 10/16/06, but the one on 10/16 could settle.

Might be worth the trip just to meet Mach V Dan and Keefe!

It depends on which group you plan and qualify in running. Normally the first to fill up is HDPE Group 1 and 2 (possibly with about 40 cars max per each group).. Group 3 and Group 4 doesnt fill up as fast simply because by those levels either you are instructing (Group 4) or racing (Race Groups).. you'll find a few Group 3 guys that are out there to get their practice in and learn about open-passing (pass anywhere with a point-by) to get themselves ready about either instructing or taking the racing license. Some are just out there for some fun without so much the traffic of trains in Group 1 and 2. Summit Point Main Circuit is a 2-mile long track, so it's ok to cram in just about 40 to 45 cars at a time.. VIR can hold a lot more since VIR-Full is 3.27 miles long. Here's more specs on Summit Point:

You can certainly come on down as the event and fun doesnt start until Saturday morning and the first car off the line is at 8:30am and the last session doesnt finish til 5pm or 6pm. It's both days, so Dan and and I will be there all weekend long. I can give rides as well as Dan I believe (I think Dan runs in Group 3 or 4 in his personal Evo).

I think Dan may be using his Legacy Wagon this year as the pace car for the whole weekend.

Definitely come down! It would be great if you can arrive and drive, but if not, you can still catch a ride with me on the track in my GT for a session.

Thanks Keefe. I haven't been able to do a track event after modding my car (and rear ending a truck last week) and trying to fix my damn uppipe leak. To do this, I'll have to get the Oct 16 trial settled somehow. It's a bit of a drive from South Bend.

I've been to Summit Point several times since I used to live in northern Virginia and then on Capital Hill in the late 1980s and early 90s. Used to take drives out there just to find twisty roads for my 1986 GTi to have fun on, visit Winchester, WV, to go visit Bob Tullius' Group 44 shop, and stop by Summit to watch rich fools roll their Ferrari Daytonas (at the height of their value! Ah, but at least he had fun) in the mud when they went too hot into the big turn at the end of main straight. Bet insurance didn't cover that!

Since I've never taken a big car on a track, I imagine I'd end up in the novice group despite several years of kart racing. I'm not sure that's a bad thing since I am a mediocre kart racer! I'll keep an eye on this maybe my lunatic client will see the light so I can go have fun.

it's possible that since you have been out on the track already and you just need a refresher, you may be able to run in Group 2. Unless you dont know track ettiquettes and dont know your corner stations etc, you could take it really easy and start fresh in Group 1 as well. It just might be easier to start off at Group 1 and just work your way up from there.

show up anyways, go for a ride or something, get a feel of what a track day is like. Also during lunch there are touring laps you can do for a small fee (smaller than autox) and gives you a good look of what it's like to see the track at 60mph limit, no passing, and no helmet required. Just strap yourself in, take a look see around the track for about 10 to 15 mins in your own car.

Freakin Sweet! I'm totally there dude, just registered this evening! Quick question... How fast or better yet consistent do you have to be to step up in class with NASA? What is the process for progression anyway? Ok so there are two questions there.

NASA recently started with every student with a "Student Passport" which they hope that it would spread and be used with ANY car club that supports/runs High Performance Driving. In the passport it lists all the things a student needs to show and know about in each group level (with a total of 4 levels, and the first two have mandatory ride-along instructors, and group 3 and 4 are solo groups). This will also help the student learn quickly (think of it as a report card) so you can see which areas you can work on the next time you are on the track, or even better, you can probably get some really good feedback from your instructor on Saturday, think about those things overnight, and work on them Sunday's sessions.

It's up to your instructors that you get that will evaluate your consistency. I normally like to see at least 3 consistent laps in a row before I can even think of moving on to the next group. As long as the student shows a very good understanding of each required item listed in that passport, then all the better. I have had other students that came from other car clubs with plenty of experience, so I spend at least their first NASA track weekend doing a little overview of everything that is required out of a Group 1 and possilby Group 2 student. If there are things missing, then we'll work on those items.

Progression is truely up to the student's learning ability. NASA (and many other car clubs) really don't just "process" their students along to the next step, especially if they dont know something that they should have..

the faster you are as a learner and the more you mature mentally behind the wheel AS you are progressing in the skills and experience, the faster you climb the ranks to either continue to be a high-performance driver, track instructor or even a racer.

  • 1 month later...

Only two more days! We'll have a section of the paddock reserved (across from the tech shed) so we can all hang out. If any of you want to show up and spectate, you're welcome to. Stop by and say hi. I'll have the Legacy there as cargo ship, and the Evo for track duty...

there's a thread with the pics posted.

I had a blast this past weekend starting with the Audi Instructor Clinic on Friday (not part of the NASA weekend event).. I had a good 3 to 4 hours on track with them at Summit Point.

NASA weekend is always fun, and I really enjoy instructing.. I like to have a challenging student that quiz me on such things about driving and I always like to teach them something new. Both of my students were great and did a really good job making the progression without any kind of negative response from them.
