morrisok
I have a '06 5EAT LGT wagon that has 2K miles and in the last week or so I have noticed that sometime when I change it from Sport to Standard mode after exiting the freeway it shifts down to First gear!! I thought I might be imagining things and accidentally shifting into First gear until this afternoon. I was driving down steep (8% grade) hill in Standard mode about 25-30 mph when somebody on a side street didn’t not see me or the 3 cars behind me and pulled out in front. I slammed on the breaks and stopped inches from the car. When I looked up the dash said the car was in First gear!! Has anyone experienced or heard of this? This is my first auto trans in 20 years but it seems that it shifts a little hard when I get on it. Thoughts?
azca
auto downshifts to 1st gear when you stop, obviously
morrisok
I agree, but it was as if I had manually changed it to first and showed on the dash that it was in first. From my understanding it only shows the gear your in if you do it manually? Correct?
azca
nope; auto is called auto because it shift gears for you; your shifting is interfering with what the computer does and the computer can and will overwrite your actions anytime it wants; that's why you should buy a manual car
morrisok
I couldnt find a used 05 and they dont offer a manual LGT Wagon in 06 or I would have thought about it.. The sedan didnt make sense for long roadtrips with the family and for my fishing trips.. So it sounds like the trans is acting as it should I need to put the crack pipe down... Thanks for the feedback.
azca
try this, put shifter in the manual mode and just drive without shifting gears; see if the # changes on the dashboard as the computer shifts
mikeyan
I can hold a gear with my auto wagon to the rev limiter, and hold it there without it shifting "if i'm driving in manual mode". I don't really drive in "D" or "S", but i've never seen the gear numbers show up when i have driven around in short spurts with full automatic. azca
So if you are in 4th gear and in manual mode and you stop, you are saying the gear will not downshift to 1st automatically? mikeyan
Err, i meant to add in upshift wise... it will not upshift in manual mode for you, but it will still auto-downshift SoCal Duck Hunters Club - Unit

If you were, and had been, in standard mode and had not recently been playing around with the shifter buttons on the wheel this should not have happened. Period. Also if you are in sport and switch to standard it should immediately go into that mode. I'd call the dealer.
wukindada
Gear selected on dash only comes up if buttons have been used:rolleyes:....or if you bump the + or - with the gear selector. I sometimes find myself resting my right had on the shifter while driving, I've accidentally bumped it forward a few times. Really do not notice it until you come to a stop & restart.... Scotty
If you are in standard drive mode, the only time the gear display will turn on is when you touch one of the buttons which temporarily puts it into manual mode. It will go back to standard mode once you stop or go through a cycle of getting on and off the gas. If you are in sport mode, the gear display will turn on when you make it go into manual mode by either touching a shift button or moving the shift lever. Otherwise, no gear display.
