onesillyracer
So yesterday I picked up my 05 lgt from the dealership and ran in out to do errands with the car. at one point i noticed when the car isnt moving and you turn the steering wheel from side to side, i hear a knocking type sound, yet when i am in motion i do not hear it. is this something to worry about? the car has 20k miles and is lowered on swift racing springs. onesillyracer
Tie rod end? the sound is quite noticeable when not in motion and turning the wheel from side to side, you hear like a metal clunking kind of sound. would this be covered under warranty? TravisS
There was somebody else who noticed this and posted a thread about it a while ago. I can't seem to find the thread... and I was trying to find it because it had good info on why this happens. But basically, it's normal (when you're stopped). onesillyracer
damn, wish you could find that thread!
whitetiger
if the steering is knocking, then open the door and let it in..... steering knock is mostly due to a worn tie rod or ball joint in more severe cases. Could be too much play in the steering rack, but that almost never happens. If its happening while the car is still, have a friend make the noise while you listen around the car to see if you can pin down where its comming from. You should be able to determine at least what side its on.
onesillyracer
the sound appears to be coming towards the drivers side. i happened to bump the thread in the warranty forums. looks like this problem is really common with the legacys. whitetiger
if you are brave enough. stick you hand under the car and hold on to different joints and links while someone is turning the wheel. you should be able to feel the knocking from the part that is causing it. OBXTbyrequest
Bumping an old thread about bumping. Any resolution to this? I suspect I'm having a tie rod / LCA / CV Axle / ball joint issue as well, but the symptom is very similar to what you've described. I'm also getting a rubbing type noise when my suspension reaches full extension (front is raised slightly after a bump). Haven't had a chance to lift it up and look, or test this out with someone else yet so who knows.
