CMull123
So here's the deal. I'm drivin on the highway the other day, just mindin my own business, cruisin about 70 in 5th. I go to pass someone and give it a little more gas so I can pass quicker, I didn't stomp on the gas, I didn't feather it, I just gave it enuf to speed up. I accelerate about 2-3 mph then all of a sudden my tach flings itself up to around 5 grand with no more acceleration. I did this a few more times to see if it would do it. I couldn't get it to do it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th at around the same respective rpm's that it started at (around 3k.) Anyone ever heard of this, know of this problem or anything of the sort. Thanx for your help.
-TT-
this means you need to replace your clutch since it is slipping.
jerami1981
negative hoss, its not his clutch, if it were it would do it in every gear. Guessing syncros or whatever it is that holds the car in gear is giving out in 5th..just not mechanically inclined enough to know exactly what piece it is. hifiandmtb
Turntable's right, I'm afraid. Clutch slip starts in the higher gears & when it gets worse enough is a problem in 2nd & 3rd. The reason is torque versus revs - when the engine is spinning at lower revs & under a large® load (as in a higher gear), clutch slip is worse. You cannot possibly have a manual transmission issue that causes occasional slip. It will either break or work (or be noisy ).

Slip will always be more noticable first in higher gears under lower RPM and higher torque situations. How many miles on the clutch?

scans007
yeah my new clutch actually did this while it was break'n in a few times......freaked me out something fierce.... Def get it to the dealer to look at ASAP, the last thing you want is to be stranded and towed.....I know 1st hand what that feels like...clutch to the floor and poof your all done...... TSiWRX
Like the others said, this is the first sign that your clutch is slipping, and giving up the ghost. CMull123
Drive's me nuts that my friggin clutch is dyin. Car and Driver got what, 30,000 miles on theirs and I'm sure they beat it A LOT more than I beat mine. I've only got about 14,500 on this clutch, engine, flywheel, everything. LongHiway
No chance it could just be the shift linkage needing adjustment? It's only 14 K (admitedly hard) miles.
PhilT
As long as you haven't done any power increasing modifications, then your clutch is covered by the warranty. Double Award Winning Legacy GT Wagon
deimos
CLUTCH SON lol +1 I had the same prob. if you are stock you may get it covered under warranty as there have been some bad pressure plates. http://legacygt.com/forums/warranty-issues-problems/21452-slipping-3rd-4th-5th.html?highlight=slipping+3rd Either way dealer will tear it down and check for "abuse" good luck. Really cant adjust a shift linkage in a subie. All the linkages are solid steel rods attached directly to the tranny. Its a solid mechanical linkage no cables. warnoldscu
yeah, if you can repeat the thing then the dealer should def. replace for you...unless you plan on modding, then jump into that MTS group buy
jerami1981
like i said..clutch issues duh ..weird though..i had a similar problem in my last outback...only it was in reverse only..if i was gentle i could back up just fine, but as soon as i got on the gas it would pop out of gear. 1-5 could take 1-6k brutal beatings and do just fine though. I consider this a lesson learned....only pipe in after everyone else has else you look like a jackass
Ric
[Edit: oops, posted before reading page two. I see you're agreeing it's the clutch now ] negative hoss, its not his clutch, if it were it would do it in every gear. Wrong, wrong, wrong, as already noted by others. Guessing syncros or whatever it is that holds the car in gear is giving out in 5th.. Synchros don't "hold you in gear". That is what spins the gears up to matching speeds as you are changing, nothing to do with staying in gear. just not mechanically inclined enough to know exactly what piece it is. As you've just demonstrated with the above "advice"...

deimos
Uh, so if we actually went stage 2, the clutch will not be covered by warrenty? It is likely that if the dealer detects mods, knows about them, thinks you have been "racing", or can in any way prove "abuse", they will. Technically tho if a problem can be traced back to a mod, they can deny warranty claims. ie: producing power greater than stock = the "cause", even if it was a defective part. Maybe not, prob depends on your dealer and the circumstances.

PhilT
The purpose of the AP is to give you more power ~ if you go into the dealer claiming warranty on your clutch, and they discover that you have (or had) an AP then likely they will deny your claim. If you unmarry your AP, and it is not detected by the dealer, then you may have a chance, although that would technically be fraud if you ever get found out.
