Hard wire RADAR Detector?

BLACKonBLACK Limited

Recommended Posts

I did a quick search couldn't find it, but i want to hard wire my bell Radar detector to something in the headliner ( i want it to turn on with the car and off with the car, i dont want to have to use a map light button or such)

And i will be hacking up the cigarette adapter power wire.

and walkthroughs?

This is the first "mod" that I did. I picked up the car at 8PM, got up at 6AM, done by 6:15.

I have no sunroof. I just tapped into a map light. If I remember correctly, I grounded it with the screw that held the assembly in. It has had no effect on the map light's function, and comes on and off with the key.

I don't remember the specifics, I just sort of explored and found the way to pull everything out.

Sorry not to be more help, but at least you know it can be done!

If you take your map light assembly apart, there is a wire in there for the autodimming mirror that you can tap. It's switched 12v so it turns on and off with the key.

Here is mwiener2's link to his remote mount install. pretty slick I must say.

I have two different walkthroughs in the 'walkthrough' forum

^ True, bro, but he's looking for a more "basic" write-up, as in where to tap the power from - over by the mirror/map-light/moonroof switchgear. ;)

If you have the Remote power cord with display and mute functions, they fit nicely in the ashtray.

Power can also be picked up in the feed to the cig. lighter which is switched with the ignition.

I don't have a walkthough done, but it is pretty straight forward.

^ +1.

Also, you can hop down to your local RadioShack and get generic "straight" cording relatively easily, which are usually provided with a set of power adaptors for popular detectors.

You can then cut-and-splice this wire to your heart's content, without fear of screwing up your "factory" cord. Besides, it'll also offer a cleaner-look install, with minimal cost outlay. ;)

So i finally got an Auto dim and attempted the install of the mirror and hardwire for the RADAR

The harness that is up in the headliner for the auto dim does not have any power running to it. (yess the power was on ACC) I even busted out the multimeter and my speculation was right, no power.

weird tho because everything else wired threw the headliner has power (lights etc..)

And i highly doubt there is a fuse dedicated for the auto dim harness.

hmm...

I would just route the power across the headliner and down the A-Pillar under the dash and get power from there. You can route the wire so it doesn't affect the airbag. That would probably hurt if the airbag went off. It can be done.

so i noticed my heated seats went out and my power rearview mirrors did too

they are all on one fuse (power rearview, heated seat relay, autodim) aka i must have tripped the fuse when i was didling with my multimeter.

I will replace the fuse and update.

Any update? Been a few hours. ;)
