Car got Towed :(

Recommended Posts

Hi all...

I just bought a Legacy GT couple of weeks back and drove to NY to visit a couple of friends. Unfortunately, my car got towed in NYC.

$115 for the ticket

$185 for towing

One expensive trip!!

I saw them taking the car in front of me...the worst site ever! The problem is they towed the car with the front tires in the air. Basically, the rear tires were on the ground.

I am scared about the AWD of the car...

I drove the car back to virginia and didnt feel anything different in the car....there was no light (check engine, AWD, etc) on in the car when I started it.

Should I get it checked?? It is gonna mess up a lot of things?

If anyting goes wrong, can I sue the towing company?

Please let me know..

Thanks.

Probably not far. Manhattan is 12 miles long, and around 4 miles wide. If you got towed in midtown, then that is like a 2 mile trip to the west end holding port.

You should be OK, and I see cars towed in the city all the time, and most are out of towners!

I just always park in a garage. It seems expensive at the time, but avoids vandalism or the goons who drive those trucks. I had a car stolen once and the thieves didn't damage it (just ripped off the radio) but the tow truck operators managed to cause almost $1,000 in damage towing it about 1/4 mi. And they were outraged that I wanted them to pay for it.

Regardless of seeing or having a sticker like that...

The tow company is responsible for ANY and ALL damages to your vehicle when they tow it. I've seen PLENTY of cases like this on the TV court shows, and the tow company always ends up paying, if it can be proven it was done by them.

In this case, if there was any transmission damage, it would be VERY easy to prove it was done by them, since you saw the tow vehicle, and a letter from any Subaru dealer would tell the judge what he needs to hear.

Car is a 5EAT and was on PARK ...it didn't travel a lot of distance. I was able to walk to the towing place in about 5-7mins....

I will definitely get those stickers now!

Gonna go to the dealer tomorrow to get it checked...

any idea how much are they gonna charge me for it?

Good luck with tow company, which is DOT.

Exactly what I was thinking. You should see hwo fast they take your car. My friend had his BMW towed, and they managed to mess up his front lip. Answer from them "It was like that when it got towed!".

They don't care about anything, and seeing as to how you are in the wrong to begin with (parking in a tow zone) you will have an up hill battle getting anyting out of the NYC DOT.

I still think your car is fine.

The car seems fine so far....I drove all the way back...I don't feel any difference...but I will still get it checked for my satisfaction...

Most tow companies in CO only use flatbed, because they know their ass will get sued by AWD car owners here (which are at a high percentage).

Personally, I'd get the car and differentials checked out at the dealer. If they're hosed, send the towing company a letter carbon copied to your attorney.

You should see how they tow the cars in Wrigleyville when illegally parked for a night game! I saw a Civic or some fwd econo car parallel parked dragged out sideways by the tow truck tires squeeling the whole way then hooked up to the rear wheels.

Tow truck drivers don't give two shits if its AWD, FWD, RWD...hence the sign 'towed at owners expense'

What does the tow slip state as far as the tow method. This is the definitive piece of evidence in what methodology was used. Not sure if you noticed or not but your car can be towed wheels up if a tow cart is used on rear wheels to keep them from spinning.

I have already ordered the decal for the car and will be going to the dealer's shop tomorrow...

will keep u guys posted and thanks for ur help..

The chance that your Subaru dealer can provide you with sufficient "evidence" for a successful claim against the towing company is very small. On the other hand, you're notifying Subaru that your car was towed incorrectly (not Subaru's fault) and thus, any future warranty work on the center differential will be out the window.

Not sure about the AT, but with the MT, neutral shouldn't make any difference, the front and rear are coupled togther through the VC. At least that is how my DSMs are, I don't see why the subie would be different. That is actually how I ended up with my Galant VR4 years ago. I saw some idiot towing it from a parking lot with the rear wheels on the ground. I tried to warn him, but he ignored me. He said he would be fine, because it was out of gear. I told him he was wrong, but he blew me off. I took down the tow company info, thinking the car belonged to a fellow DSMer. I left the parking lot, and saw the truck pulled over less then half a block away, with curving skid marks leading to the GVR4. To make a long story short, no one claimed the car, and I purchased a very clean Galant VR4 for $750 with a bad tranny. This was back in 2000, so a very good deal.
