Trackday - LGT can't catch an ES300??

Recommended Posts

My other car is a Lexus and therefore, I frequent the ClubLexus.com website and forums. Kewl site and kewl folks.

I'm reading through a thread about an ES owner who took his car to the track (not a common event with the ES; they're more about cruising than autocrossing) and low and behold the last post shocked me:

That may be why my friend is haveing hard time following me on the track with his (stock) 2005 subaru Legecy GT( turbo), his car just fly around on the track...

He's kidding right? An AWD 250 HP LGT can't keep up with a FWD ES with ~190 HP?!?

Should I be investing all my performance mod money in my ES instead? :icon_wink

Interesting read. The ES has lots of suspension mods. If the Legacy is on stock tires, that alone would do it in. The driver also has lots to do with it. Still, don't underestimate the mass market Camry and Accord (and their up-market derivatives from Lexus and Acura). These cars have very solid fundamentals compromised for "safe" and comfortable tuning. Change the tuning like this guy did and you have something competitive.

If they're enough of an enthusiast to run their LGT at the track, there's an excellent chance they're a board member here.

I'm hoping we can locate the owner and get their perspective of Trackday at Shannonville (wherever that is).

When you get into any sort of competitive motorsport you will soon realize that the driver is 99 percent of the equation.

In autox I have beaten a saleen mustang by over 4 seconds, a vette by over 10 seconds, several STi's ect. Just because the driver did not have a developed skill set.

His suspension setup:

"Thx for all the relpy, and here is my current supension setup so far for those if interest to know.- Kg/mm supersport Dr21 springs (-45mm F , - 35mm R)- KYB GR2 shocks (both are too soft for the track)- Whiteline F / R sways ( 27 mm F, 19 mm R) ( it does help a lot on the track, specially on the exit of the apex )- OEM solara strut bar ( it help the steering reponse, noticable during the entry on the corner)- PBR race front pad w/ brembo solid disc / PBR metal master rear, it holds up pettry well for the weight on the car ( will try Hawk HP plus next time, it should be better)- Sc430 rims with the hub cab off, (more easy for the brakes to cool down) ahahah- General Exclaim UHP 225-40-18 ( it holds up and grip much much much better than i thought than my previous Dunlop FM901 )"

Uhhh that is an older ES. I find this really hard to believe. not to mention, the poster can barely write english.

He has a highly modded suspension setup vs a stock LGT with perhaps a n00b driver, not that hard to believe.

The english bit should have nothing to do with anything, hes making an obvious effort to write (which is very difficult for any second language) in our language. How many languages do you speak or write in? ONE? thats what I thought... go try and communicate on a Japanese legacy forum and see how well you do.

the ES300 guy didnt see what a modded GT would look like on the track. ;)

I just run:

Zeal Function V6 Coilovers

Cusco Vacanza Front and Rear Sways

Cusco Rear Under Brace

and about a dozen types of R-compound tires and brake setups

Im sure if I went out to Shannonville (Ontario Canada btw, it's about 2~3 hours East of Toronto just right off the 401), I wouldnt mind going with a few hot laps of what a modded ES300 looks like.

Who knows, the guy sounds like he has enough track experience, but too bad I cant say much about running around on street tires..

Anyway, the stock LGT doesn't handle all that great for track use, especially since the alignment from the factory blows. It was already mentioned, but driver skill is a big part of it, and having a stiffer suspension helps a lot on the track. Don't forget that the stock RE-92's have soft sidewalls and not much grip.
