HansGT
thinking of getting the crucial shorty downpipe and use the cobb turbo heat shield as I'm not sure i want to trim the stock heat sheild. will they work together....who's go this set up? also, can you paint the Cobb THS? I was thinking i could use engine paint, but I know the turbo gets super hot and don't want to take away from the HS's job. (Thinking black so it's not so "AFTERMARKET" right in your face.) let me know what you guys/gals think.
mickeyd2005
Don't do it. There are different types of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. I think that the primary function of the heat shield is to block thermal radiation. If anything, you want this thing to be polished. I know that the heat shield will get dirty eventually, but a polished heat shield with some dirt on it is still going to work a lot better than a painted heat shield. HansGT
but isn't the cobb going to sheild more heat? it will cover more area and keep more heat in the turbo thus moving the air faster.
Steiner
Here's mine to use a template if you decide to trim. You can retain most of the stock one's coverage and leave on even more than I did.....if you actually hold your pipe up to it and trim before you install the pipe. I didn't. It takes just a few minutes with a Dremel and the metal cutting wheel. Experience is something you don't get until right after you needed it. TSiWRX
^ That's what I did - only I went the He-Man way as my Dremel was out on-loan at the time. A pair of tin-snips will do this quite easily, too, and I'm not even able to close a number-2 "Captains of Crush" more than once ( I know, I'm weaksauce! ). Han'sGT, bro, if you're worried about the looks, you can see if Crucial will still take parts for coating (not certain of this status at the moment) - their thermal coating should help quite a bit, and is very attractive, too, as you know, from the DP. I would also think that mickeyd2005's got the right idea...but at the same time, I also can't help but wonder if perhaps some of the high-temperature paints from, say Thermo-Tec, may also have some heat-barrier capabilities that can also help with radiated heat. HansGT
Thanks guys. I'd prefer not to have to hack up the stocker. I'll look into paints to see if anything is acceptable for the heat sheild.

I didn't really want to either...."just in case"....so I just posted a want-to-buy for an unmolested one and someone sold me theirs cheap so I've got a spare. HansGT
Thanks for all the comments. Trimming the stocker is still an option on the table. But the question remains...will the Cobb THS fit the crucial DP?
rc0032
The better question is will the Cobb add any value or just bling Anything can be made to fit
TDC Joe
If you are on a budget which it really seems you are then it is a no brainer to save the $50+ and trim the stocker. You can't even tell it was trimmed once is it back on and in there. So if you are worried about when you return to stock to sell it or something, they would never be able to see with just an under hood eye inspection that it was trimmed a small amount. Cobb HS is mostly all bling the stocker is tigher to the VF40 anyway. They function the same way but who knows, some people just want the aftermarket piece.... PM Me for all your Modification Needs! I'll be paying for my install, so to have somebody trim the stocker = time and money. Just wondering if its just better to go with the cobb. Rip of the stocker (guess it's just bolted?) and stick on the cobb.

BoxerGT2.5
Everything is bolted on. The one Cobb heatshield I've installed had to be coaxed on, the holes didn't line up with the brackets. OBAMA......One Big Ass Mistake America!
