New Way to Bling Mufflers

It's like $7 or $8, so hardly overkill though. Good for 1200F. I've used hi-temp BBQ paint before...it flakes off. Not a big deal as it's cheaper and easy to respray.

Yeah, summitracing has it for under $7. What's the temp limit for BBQ paint and what max temp would you expect the mufflers to reach? I'll definitely go the paint-it-&-forget-it approach as the time spent repainting is worth way more than the $10 difference in price.

A few weeks ago there was a discussion of Borla catback systems which fit the Legacy sedan, but the tips don't look good on the wagon because they should be longer. So if Borla makes tips, why don't they offer a set-up that is slightly longer for the wagon? Too much trouble for them?

It really doesn't make any sense does it? They make all these cool tips, all they would have to do is make the muffler outlet pipes a fixed diameter and allow specification of any correctly sized tip. They could even make a few more bucks that way:iam:

I painted the exhaust housing on my turbo with Thermo-Tec and it looks as good as new after a week and hard driving in 100F temps. Seems the mufflers will get more dirt, rain and crap, so hard to say how it will hold up. Most BBQ paint is good to 800F I think. I doubt your mufflers will get that hot.

The wagon tips are 11 inches long. Getting something the same diameter and that fits over the flange...you could drill it out and secure just like OEM. That's what I was trying to do, but gave up. Seems silly to spend more than $100 since I want dual tips and the stock outlet sits too low.

It'll be tough to find a tip that will fit over the OEM brackets. I'm just gonna saw the tip off right before it flares out into an oval. Worst case I can recreate the stock tips by welding the flares back on. $100+ does seem like a bit much BUT I want it quiet and other posts have indicated little or no difference in power between stock and aftermarket mufflers WITH a less restrictive res/Y. Love to see dyno results on a Perrin, AVO or Lachute res/Yw/ NO mufflers. If the Forced Induction in McKinnney does a dyno day for us again I may take a pull that way.

I'd be up for a dyno on my stocker before I get to do any performance mods, and to provide some comparison for modded cars.

By the way, your car sounds good. I stuck around long enough to hear you fire it up the other night. Do you get any drone/resonance from the res/Y and did that make a big difference in the overall volume of the exhaust inside the car? I'm thinking about hacking off my stock resonator for a little extra noise.

I'm very happy with the sound of my car, which is why I decided to go the tip-bling route rather than try the Borla or other CBE. BTW I pretty sure I'll have this done before the GTG so everyone can see how it looks.

Look forward to seeing you and the completed project on the 19th.

After you saw off the tip, fire up the engine and let us know how it sounds. Sometimes small changes to the real tip (not the cover) relative to the muffler can have a surprising affect on the sound.

I'm also interested in adding a longer cosmetic tip to the mufflers on my wagon. I don't think the USDM muffler tips are long enough, but I don't really care for the Greddy SP2 grapefruit launchers.

Thanks. His home page is rather sparse.

Sorry - didn't see this thread. Yeah, getting to my car sites requires knowing the URL to the particular car.

My old Stealth

Various other cars I used to own

The front page is for my company, MooJohn Inc., and I'll soon be using the main site for actual business :D

I should take more pics of the Legacy too. I got tired of the ashy gray appearance of the rear trim and painted it satin black. Big improvement!

Woohoo, the other one arrived today! Don't know why they shipped separately - the shipping was free so it cost them more money. Going on this weekend. I'm gonna cheap out on the paint a bit and buy the Duplicolor Hi-Heat (1200F). ThermoTec recommended carb or brake cleaner to prep the mufflers so I'll snag a can of that as well. It's gonna be one stinky, smelly, hallucingenic garage on Saturday. Hope that $#&* doesn't hit like a whippet:)

Got the paint and cleaner for the mufflers yesterday. Won't have time to tackle this project until late next week. Stay tuned...

Doesn't sound like we'll be seeing the completed project at the GTG on Saturday. Too bad, was looking forward to seeing the final results.

I'll definitely have the tips on there for the GTG. That won't take more than 30 minutes. It's the muffler cleaning and painting that's going to take a while. I SHOULD be able to do it Saturday morning but...

Sounds like a plan. If you don't show at the GTG, we'll send the paramedics out to resuscitate you from the fume inhalation!

Decided I needed to make some progress tonite before painting tomorrow morning so I got out the floor jack, pulled the mufflers off, sawed off the tips where they start to go oval, test fitted the Borla tips and cleaned the mufflers. OMG, the Borlas fit PERFECT!!! They're a little loose at first but the ID tightens up a bit after the clamp and after that they're nice and tight. Ya know, I could post that last sentence on any porn site:icon_mrgr

Anyway, the brake cleaner didn't work so well. If you're thinking about doing this don't bother. I ended up going over the mufflers with plain water and a rag. Probably a better solution out there but they're plenty clean now and ready to be blacked out. I should have pics and a vid by tomorrow afternoon. South Centrals, if you're going to the GTG tomorrow you may want to skip my next post so it'll be a surprise:cool:
