Ouch! Windshield price

Recommended Posts

Make sure you check your interior A-pillar trim before they leave, they will need to remove that to get to the wiper heater electrical connector. Safelite broke the plastic in both places where it mounts to the car and then tried to hide the fact by sticking it in place with that black goo adhesive. I then had to fight with them for two or three weeks to get it replaced and cleaned up.

Do they give europeans this kind of weak glass?

You bet, it didn't take more then a couple of weeks before I started to get cracks in my windshield. It's all the small pebbles that winter tyres with studs carvs out of our so called tarmac

Question. Whose insurance covers this? I have Nationwide and they dont cover windshields the way some other companies do. My understanding is that many companies will give you a $50 deductable because a windshield is important for seeing. Obviously.

In MA, windshield replacement is mandatory with no deductable.

Nice deal eh? We also pay very high premiums.

Lately, the insurance companies are (trying) to regulate where and under what conditions you get to a new windshield covered by insurance. It's probably an areas that's been abused by the industry and consumers.

Imagine that....

Mandatory coverage being used to the point of abuse... The Government comes in and tells you what you WILL have, and WILL pay for, the Insurance companies get the GUARANTEED premiums, and then when they have to pay the claims that the customers make (who think they should get the coverage they are being made to pay for) and the Insurance company thinks it isn'f fair, and then try to withhold paying claims.

Can the population decide to pay or not to pay the premiums? hell no.

This is case in point of why socialism doesn't work. More government control means less quality for more cost and collusion. The same would work with socialized medicine or education, or anything else... Gov't mandates that you pay, regardless of whether the quality declines as the taxes or prices go up.

WHY do you think the price of this glass is so expensive????

BECAUSE THE CUSTOMER DOESN'T USUALLY PAY IT! The Insurance companies do. The Insurance companies don't mind so much, because they can afford it, or they can raise OUR premiums until they can afford it. Insurance companies soak customers, and the companies that sell glass, parts, or perform body work get more money for that work than they would otherwise be able to charge a customer directly.

If the Glass company, or body shop, or anybody like that had to compete for individual customers, and all the regular people had to pay these prices without the insurance collusion, we'd ALL be telling these people to take a hike, because their prices are far too high. But now it is just an insurance claim, and a deductible payment, if that.

Insurance buffers that, while they make money, too. They make money on all the people who don't have claims, vs. the fraction that do, and investing their income, and making interest on that, as well. If they get a flood of claims, they file for bankruptcy, and start over.

If the government gets involved, then it makes even more of a mess, by forcing the market, which in insurance, can barely qualify as free anymore...

It is working, though... With all of these reports, you had better believe that I am going to make sure my Legacy will have no-deductible glass coverage, so that I don't have to pony up 700 clams when the windsheild cracks... I am walking into the trap with my eyes wide open, not that I am happy about it.

Yup, this state is the capital of government is good for the people so, bigger government must be even better.

'Course, this is also the place where government let these contractors take the state and Feds for about $14 B building some roads and tunnels.

That should get some comments going for a lazy summer day...

Hope you like taxes.

Taking the gov't for 14Billion means taking YOU for that much. Me, too, on the federal level, and I am not really pleased.

Government has never spent a dollar they ever earned, EVER. They spend money WE earn. Thankyouverramuch.

And ask the people killed in the Boston tunnel if the money was spent well... It is bad enough that they soak the tax payers the way that they do, but then they do shoddy work to the point that it is lethally dangerous. It is appalling.

Sorry for the off-topic, but you asked...

Wonder how many windshields get done in my tractor trailors?

In my maxima (2 cars ago), a tractor trailer cut into the left lane(I had to brake). He over shot the lane slightly and his wheels kicked up a bunch ofgrave on the side. Peppered my wind shield and put chips all over the front of the car.

that would be 2 windsheilds for me in my 03 legacy cuz of a tractor trailer.

Do they give europeans this kind of weak glass?

Yep... within the last several years, it seems. I used to own a '99.5 GTI VR6 and after 5 years, the windshield looked "okay". Then I bought a 2004 R32. After only 2 years, the windshield looked pretty bad... about the same as my former 5-year-old GTI. Very soft glass.

Now, my specB has rock chips and pits and nicks all over the place after only maybe 6 months. It looks terrible.

FWIW, I have Allstate and they have a phone number to call specifically for windshield replacement and/or repair. It's categorized under comprehensive, so I paid only $50 when I had to get my windshield replaced on my old GTI. IIRC, the price quote for that was $400-450 for just plain glass. The car also had rain sensing wipers, so that may have added to the cost slightly. Other than that, there was no tint and no heating elements like on the specB.
