mwiener2
I've had an exhauSt leak for a while, didn't bother me. The noise was the same since I went stage 2 (almost a year ago) but the smell was getting bad. I had my dad in the car and he couldn't stand it and paid for the new gaskets so I dove right in. Wellllll... I took of the heatshield and look at what I found: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a257/mwiener2/IMG_1021.jpg I took it apart and this is what was left: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a257/mwiener2/IMG_1024.jpg I guess I probably would have noticed by now, but ya think any of that got sucked into the turbo? Cause any damage? I replaced ALL of the gaskets and now the car is SILENT. So apparently, I've had an exhaust leak the entire time I've been stage 2 and I even changed out a few gaskets 3 weeks after going stage 2. I kinda liked the rumble it made when it was apparently leaking....looks like i might get myself new mufflers..... KTM 525
Yeah my Crucial cooper gasket did not last long there either. That thing had to be squeeling like a pig under boost. I used 2 OEM gaskets and stacked them. No more leak so far. Your car is dirty underneath LOL.
specinvstr
Uh oh, that is where my bissing bolt was located. Hope my copper gasket (crucial cer 2) holds up.

TSiWRX
My gasket is fine, but damn if that isn't the same nut that I lost (lower on flange, manifold-to-UP) that started all of my current "troubles." The problem with me is that I believe, sincerely, that I forgot to re-torque that one after heat-cycling during my initial install, and then *again* forgot to do it after having "fixed" it a couple of weeks ago. This time ( in-part to fix this leak, but more importantly, during my install of new Crucial PP&C'ed manifolds and Injen cross-pipe ), after only ONE heat-cycle, I found both the upper and lower bolt/nut combinations to be loose enough to require re-torquing. You can bet I'm going to hit them again after another couple of heat-cycles - just to be sure. If they continue to give me trouble, I'm going to slip a couple of locking washers on there. These, so far, have been my ONLY problematic set of bolts/nuts. And yes, this type of leak will result in a LGT that sounds pretty much like one that's equipped with an aftermarket exhaust. The only difference is that the sound will be coming from your "engine bay" instead of from behind the vehicle. Still, this is both somewhat surprising (as it is a pre-turbo leak), and can also be rather innocous until more troubles show up in the boost department as it is, shockingly, possible to reach "Stage II"-level boost-targets with even this sizeable pre-turbo leak! ---- mwiener2 - I would wager to think that you're OK. I would think that any exhaust gasses would have "blown" the chunked bits "out." <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family

mwiener2
I tried a new meathod this time. I have that copper spray stuff for putting on gaskets. I sprayed all the bolts with it too. It gets all sticky and gunky and I think it'll help keep the nuts on. I hope. Side note.. I hit target boost 3rd through 5th (18.something PSI) But second tops out at 11psi. I can't remember if 2nd hit higher before or not. I know 2nd shouldn't hit target, but i thought it would hit more like 14 or 15....... Deer Killer
I put anti-seize on all my bolts and I have had no problems :/ Also I used real exhaust sealant, this stuff hardens with temperature and doesn't break down with temperature. Read the max temperature on the back of that that "copper" gasket crap everyone recommends. It's really a low-temp gasket with some copper in it. My guess is it looks like ash when you take it apart, if it's there at all.
Deer Killer
the RTV silicone has a better temp range, 700F, but still not high enough. mwiener2
There was still residue of the stuff on the gaskets that I took off yesterday and that had been on there for something like 14,000 miles....so i guess it does work. JuxtaGT
When I took my headers and uppipe off, that same Crucial gasket was cracked. Head gaskets look great. Uppipe to turbo looked good. Maybe the new annealed gaskets are better?

mwiener2
well, this is my last try with the coppers.....maybe Ver. 2 are better cause they're less likely to start a little leak. JuxtaGT
Well, if they are softer, and possibly more maliable, they'd be less likely to crack/fail/leak?
mwiener2
being annealed to begin with, you can crank down on them and get them really tight....as opposed to Ver1 which would anneal from the heat of the exhaust and then soften and form leaks. And once a leak forms, the hot gasses blowing by will just eat up the copper.
