Captain Obvious says check your tire pressure

Check your pressures, last time I adjusted mine it was 17 F and I set it to 35 psi front and 33 psi rear. I noticed the car has been driving slightly weird since it warmed up. Today it is 78 F out. I checked the pressures before I left from Philly trip a few hours ago and they were off a bit - 37 psi front and 38 psi rear -

I readjusted to 35 front and 33 rear and recorded 25.1 mpg on my 90 trip.

The Captain also suggest you check your lug nut torques too.

I had my new brake lines and pads fitted last week by the local dealer, fine I thought. Then today, I went to change my lug nuts and install the McGard ones, found that some nuts were only finger tight, and some took a pipe on the end of the wrench to get them off. Needless to say I will be calling them first thing Monday morning !

I did fairly decent with gas mileage on this trip after adjusting the pressures

90 miles each way.

25.1 mpg on the trip there

24.3 mpg on trip back

Also, my folks averaged 20.1 mpg on a trip the night before I adjusted the pressures. (all highway)

That's a little odd that the rear became higher than the front. Ideal gas law would predict the front be at 39.4 and rear at 38.2 psi.

Mike,

Just for your own knowledge, if you had left the greater amount of air in the tires, you would have gotten even better gas mileage. The ride would be harsher, and the tires would wear a little faster, but greater air pressure does not harm mpg, it helps. Atleast until the tires explode...

Exactly. Plus the max pressure rating on these tires are 60PSI if I remember correctly so it isnt like you were going to blow them out. Better to have them over a few PSI than under.

Check your tire pressure Gage also. They can be wildly inaccurate. Drop it once on a hard surface and in can be 2-4 lbs PSI!
