Billy Dagwood
Just a quick question: Never having driven an LGT with the subaru momo knob vs. my stocker knob, how much difference is there in terms of height and width? anybody got pictures of the momo next to the stock manual knob? Does anybody have any complaints about switching to the momo?
suba_rus
I like my MOMO very much. I cut my shifter so it shorter than stock.
robsontuning
Also which MOMO are you referring to, Subaru MOMO or the other MOMO knobs you can purchase. I just installed a MOMO F16 Evo on mine yesterday and the feel is great, but it is also taller than the stock knob so now I will purchase the Cobb STS so that I cn adjust it lower. G.T.Subie
I bought another MOMO off of Ebay but didn't like the fact it dousn't hold the boot up or screw on.I did rig somthing to hold the boot but the knob seemed to loosen up with the set screws. I am back to stock now and with the COBB STS it is a much better feel. Denial is your best friend
Billy Dagwood
I am talking about the Subaru momo shifter. like you could buy from a dealer .. NOT one of the aftermarket universal-fit ones. I don't want to deal with the thing not holding up the boot either. I have come across some other shifters that *do* hold up the boot, but I think I like this best (never having actually used one). But I still would like some input from people who switched from the stock to the subaru momo.
chrisngrod
I have an OBX shifter that I got from my MR-S. It's nice and designed similar to the MOMO knob with the metal mesh on top. After installing the Perrin STS adapter I think I must have gotten a little of the boot stuck in the knob when I put it back on. Oh well it holds the boot in place now. ocs822
The Subaru shifter is a nice piece. It is very nicely weighted, holds up the boot very well, and screws on easily. One tiny negative is that it gets frickin' cold when the mercury drops, although after a few minutes of driving an skin contact it warms up. In the end I love mine. OCDetails
Any metal shifter knob is going to be a huge pain in the winter or the summer. I drive with gloves in the winter and keep the knob covered in the summer. I think it is a lot better than the stock knob. Just in how you can shift with it is better. The stock knob slipped through my hand to easily. I like grabbing for the round knob versus the tall leather handle. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . Brady
I am that much happier I got the Cobb Short throw over the STi unit! I was working on a stereo install in my buddy's S2000 all day and we were talking about the shifter. He recently priced out an LGT online for shits and giggles. We were talking about the Cobb unit compared to the STi unit since the Cobb has so much adjustability. I really like how the Cobb allows you to change both the throw AND height. I'm probably going to machine out the plate tomorrow to allow for more adjustability!
OCDetails
STS = Short Throw Shifter Which Cobb does make one for the Legacy... I know that. I'm just saying that my shifter is the STi short throw shifter, so it is at least a little shorter than stock. I haven't really noticed it being that much shorter of a throw though. I guess I'm just used to the wrist snapping shortness of my Integra STS. I don't remember what brand it was, but I didn't even have to hardly move my arm to change gears in that thing. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . LegacyGT 05
I've got an aftermarket shifter knob (autozone - $10 looks like the momo, but a lot less). It uses the set screws like the others. To use them make sure you get some loctite - it's sold ad hardware stores. Will keep them set in place. With my Cobb shifter, it's down low enough that the boot can't go down further anyway, so it's not a problem anymore... just though you'd be interested to know... MDork
i dont see the allure of the tommy kaira knob unless you go for the super heavy one in which case you get into the argument about premature tranny wear again. is there something special about it (other than being jdm y0!) Billy Dagwood
also, I found some other knobs that should mount without modification. Anyone use a prodrive knob or the greddy counterweight? I'm ehh on both, mostly because they're metal (COLD in winter, HOT in summer), but I'm also unsure about the looks. The blue on the prodrive ones might match my abp paint, but I sorta think it might stick out being the only thing blue in the whole interior of my car. anybody got pics (or opinions?)? TSiWRX
^ I've got you covered, XRC15T. http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=378777&postcount=12 I've already replaced the faux-CF PitStop e-/p-/h-brake handle with a matching "wood" one, and am now only awaiting RedLineGoods to make a custom boot to match that component. The woodgrain finish on the knob is shiny - which will not match the matte finish of the faux finish on our trim (if so equipped). However, the patterning is very, very similar, and it is optically a decent match under most lighting. The grey/silver of the "titanium" trim matches very closely. One thing to note with the MOMO F16 knobs is that they are lighter than stock, which means it will alter both shift feel and effort. Whether this is to your liking (it's not mine, I prefer a heftier feel, but compromised) - as is the additional height conferred to the stalk (my preference, as it gets the knob closer in physical relationship to the steering wheel...my "ideal" setup would be the Porsche Carrera GT shifter-wheel relationship) - is something you should carefully consider before buying. ---- Billy Dagwood - I've had the GReddy CounterWeight on my last DSM, and I love it. Surprisingly, it never got scorching hot nor blisteringly cold.... I don't know exactly why this was the case, but I imagine it to be a combination of its effective mass - combined with the fact that it threaded directly onto the very, very "hefty" and massive B&M short-throw kit I had in that vehicle - effectively making this component one huge heat-sink. I am not certain if this effect can be replicated in our LGTs. Shift feel, though, was *incredibly* positive in that vehicle, with that combination of parts. Rifle-bolt accurate, super-direct, and super-smooth - a seemingly impossible combination. No extra effort was required, and what's more, it never seemed "notchy" like our shifter assembly. Unfortunately, I do not think that this can be replicated at all.... <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
