Planning the next stages of mods to the Legacy.... Opinions needed....

Recommended Posts

Okay so here goes... I'm going to try and fit in a few options of what to get and where to go. I'm going to assume most are going to say "power, get power..." etc. Which is fine, however I still have some basics I need to attend to. So here goes:

Package 1 :

- 28% Tint $200

- Cobb High Flow Cat DP $575

- Perrili Nero M+S tires on stock wheels $500

Total $1,275

Package 2:

- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Perrin UP $200

- SPT Cat-back Exhaust $700

Total $1,475

Package 3:

- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Perrin DP $200

- Perrin TMIC $800

Total $1,575

Package 4:

- Tint 28% $200

- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Perrin DP $200

- Perrin TMIC $800

- SPT Cat-back Exhaust $700

- Protuned by PDX-Tuning w/ ECU reflash to Stage 2 $900

Total $3,375

So here's the thing.... if I save for the last package, (that's about $281 bucks a month) I can get that 1 year for today. Or I can start doing it in stages (as listed above)

What say you guys? :iam:

Well I don't understand why you want 2 DP's?

"- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Perrin DP $200"

Do you mean to get an UP and a DP and you just copied and pasted the mistake?

Are you gonna have Jarrad tune you with EcuTek? or AP......???

Here's what I'd do

Tint - 200

Cobb Up - 250

Cobb DP (w/cat) - 575

Cobb AP - 650

Total = $1675

Then Flash Stage II

Save for

SPT - 700

TMIC - 750

Tune - 300ish

Total = $1750

Grand total of = $3425

*Prices may vary* :D

SO many options, so little time.....the only thing I can really say is, do the UP and the DP at the same time, and first...;) The way I have set it up, you don't need to worry about a tune then retune on the new parts cause you can use the cobb maps until you are "fully" ready for a tune...

here is what I'd do... (assuming you've already got an accessport -- if not, throw that in this list first)

-grab a used STi uppipe - $80

-Crucial shorty downpipe - $399

-panel filter for stock airbox - $50

- TDC custom stage 2 map - $150

- new tires, stock wheels - $500

~ $1100

keep the stock third cat, no need for the perrin TMIC yet - save that (and the custom protune) for when you've really got some substantial mod's to justify it.

Yes I'm going to have Jarrad tune it. The tempting part is to get another Chase card @ 0% APR that I just got in the mail, do all this shit at once and have one hell of a car. :)

But then again, at this point, I think doing it in stages will be better.

Oh and Scans, if I get the the package through PDX then Jarrad should give me a bit of a price break. Regardless though, I'm thinking I'll probably stick to what you said.

Also, the Cobb AP flash + the UP and DP... the car will adjust fine I'm assuming until I get the protune?

Do it in stages. You'll get more enjoyment out of the car and you'll appreciate the benefit of each mod if you add them incrementally.

#1 - Get the AccessPort now. You can run it Stage 1 with no mods, and at Stage 2 with a bunch of mods. The point is, since you are planning on buying it anyway, enjoy it while you are planning and plotting everything else you are going to do.

#2 - Get an UP and DP, and make sure you get them installed at the same time. A lot of tuners only charge for the UP since they have to take the DP off anyway. Then reflash to Cobb Stage 2.

#3 - At that point, you probably won't feel like you are in such a rush to get a Protune or to "complete" your engine mods. Take them as they come. Once you are satisfied, get your Protune.

I'm not a big proponent of getting everything done at the same time, although I realize sometimes that's the most economical way to get things installed.

If I had to pick one of the first three options (ie. short of just buying everything), I would go with Package 1.

Myself, I did a lot of what you suggested one step at a time:

Step 1 - Tint - $230

Step 2 - Tires - $760

Step 3 - Accessport - $600

Step 4 - Used swaybar - $67

Step 5 - UP/DP (crucial/shorty) - $600

Jeez...I've spent way too much dough on this car... :)

  • 2 months later...

This is what I have done so far....

Accessport

Crucial DP

Crucial UP

Front and rear sways (still debating if pinks are going along with these)

In the near future:

SPT or any other catback exhaust.

TMIC or FMIC, haven't decided yet.

Definitely a protune.

I'm really surprised that you're all starting with engine mods - my stock suspension is really starting to get on my nerves - way to much body lean and it rides to much like a lincoln. My first mods (next week!) will be a set of H-Tech Teins and Front and Back Cobb sway bars. Right after that I'm ordering my Cobb AP - thn I'll start start saving $$ for the engine mods mentioned on this thread.

I do like SC GT's Method, because after each step you will have a since of accomplishment and nice progression. (and possibly a grin). I'm putting aside money for my AP w/TDC map as we speak. In regards to uppipe's is there any reason why you would chose a crucial uppipe (or any aftermarket up) over an Sti uppipe. I know crucial has the coating but if its on an Sti it should work under high temp's pretty well. Better fitment with the sti up also? Not to mention price.

Here's my revised plan and thanks for bumping this.

Mod Plan:

- 28% Tint $200

- CobbAP w/ PDXTuning Maps $800

- CobbSways (Front / Rear) $320

- STI Pinks $340

- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Perrin UP $200

- Perrin TMIC $800

- Reflash PDXTuning Stage 2+ $149

- Borla CBE $789

- Rota Torque's 18x8 in Bronze on Pirelli M+S 225/40/18 $1,250

Total $5,424 bucks.

To those who have gone the UP/DP first.... I wouldn't have... and to anyone looking to do engine mods... Do the UP/DP AFTER you have your CobbAP and your ECU reflashed. That being said, I'm looking for about 250-300WHP out of my car (at the end) if not more and maybe later a protune. I do agree that doing this stuff in stages is worth it and in the long run, better for the car.

Regardless though, the car is going to look classy.

Looks good, bro, but mind if I play with the "order" a bit?

Mod Plan:

- 28% Tint $200

- CobbAP w/ PDXTuning Maps $800

- Rota Torque's 18x8 in Bronze on Pirelli M+S 225/40/18 $1,250

- STI Pinks $340

- Perrin UP $200

- Cobb Cat DP $575

- Borla CBE $789

- Perrin TMIC $800

- Reflash PDXTuning Stage 2+ $149

Justification:

RED section - order shift - I vote for tires/rims as initial suspension mods, followed by springs, followed by sways. This is the order that Keefe and many other suspension gurus recommend, and is both based on a consideration of the most subjective "felt" gains as well as, objectively, both true performance gains and best-tailoring the mods to your specific driving style (i.e. the sways are a final "touch-up").

Blue section - perform simultaneously - obvious one, of course, as it only makes sense to do the UP either prior-to or at the same time as the DP, as the latter must be removed to access the former.

Green section - again order shift - Although the CBE probably will not net you much power gain at all, it's still a few extra horses that you'll leave on the table if you ProTUNE/e-tune without it, so why not alter your planned attack order and take advantage of this component's full potential? At the same time, I would recommend holding off on the TMIC until immediately prior to obtaining your custom tune, as there have been a small number of past threads that have cited some fine-tuning concerns (i.e. knock correction, etc.), coupling the TMIC to a "Stage II+" setup.

Nice layout, TSi + WRX. If one didn't want to get as harsh of a ride as the STi pinks, would one skip straight to the front and rear sways, or go with milder springs, like the H&Rs?

^ Unfortunately, that's something that I don't feel comfortable answering....I'm by *_far_* NO suspension guru.

There are many others here who can better help you, and without doubt, they'll soon step-in to advise. :)

Well, I offically do not have to think about my LegacyGT anymore. Thanks TSI. ;)

Actually the funny thing is the order I had wasn't the order I was going to get stuff in... maybe losely but hey, yours is so good, **** it... I'll just go with what you suggested. :)

^ NP. :D But keep in mind, bro, I'm no guru - so definitely, keep getting opinions, as someone may well point out something that I've missed or messed-up! :)
