Shifter height feels awkward...

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

One of my minor complaints about the legacy is the shifter feels really tall. My wrx shifter feels close to perfect - if it had a slightly shorter knob it would be godly. But I am getting rid of the wrx for other reasons (lack of low end torque being one big one!).

I test drove a legacy GT with an STi short shifter kit, but other then really nice short throws, there is no height difference (altho the salesman told me there was). I have searched and found MANY replacement shit knobs for the legacy, but no one details how much shorter the knobs are vs stock height.

I find this to make the drive a bit uncomfortable... is there any way to reduce the overall height of the shifter by say... an inch? Maybe a bit more?

Thanks!

do you have the MOMO knob, or the standard knob?

the momo knob will cut a good inch off the height.

and yes, the factory STi STS does not reduce height at all, just throw length.

you can unscrew the shift knob and hack a few threads off the shifter with a hacksaw.. you can get about 3/4 an inch off that way.

+1 I just replaced the standard GT shift knob w/the momo and it does shave some height off. I imagine sawing off a few threads would decrease height substantially as well but that's your preference. The momo is nice and has a good feel to it IMO.

Well, I haven't even bought my legacy yet. But I am pretty much decided on it ;)

The two legacy's I have driven had the standard knob.

Hacking off 3/4" off the shifter with a hacksaw is something I completely never thought of. lol Guess worst case scenario, I can always do that !

Thanks.

If you are looking for a short throw shifter, get a Cobb...

The STi shifter is from what I recall somewhere around $250-$290. The only difference between the STi one and the regular shifter is the actual handle. The whole assembly you buy with the STi STS is exactly the same as the regular one.

The reason why I suggest the Cobb is....

1. It is cheaper $135.

2. It allows for double adjusability. Adjust throw and adjust the height.

3. For the same amount of money spent buying the STi STS you could buy some stiffer bushings with the Cobb STS to add to a better feel. Front bushings run $30, the rear bushing is about $30, the STi Tranny mount is about $75.

All that totals around $270 still cheaper than the STi STS and you get a much better feel for the shifter.

I've got the 5MT with the factory STi STS, and I admit than when I brought it home I felt the shifter was ridiculously high - especially compared to my other car! But within a week or two I stopped looking for alternatives - I think it feels GREAT, as-is. Probably wouldn't like it as much without the STS, but hte height doesn't bother me at all anymore.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!

+1 more on the Kartboy. First thing I did with the car, big improvement.

Only problem was the dipwad at Discount tire the other day who thought it was a six speed and couldn't figure out the shift pattern...

cool mods and pics, while they are at it, make the extended armrest standard too. Or redesign the current armrest. I like the shifter so far. No complaints. shifts nicer than my WRX did with the shift kit. Smoother at least.
