The B4
I doubt America will see the diesel models. However, for anyone who watchs Top Gear..."Diesel Cars Are NOT Cool, They say that you are interested only in saving money because they (usually) don't perform as well as the alternative and pollute more" They sure seemed to gush on the diesel A8 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
wuodabiero
They surely do... with some justification. The diesel A8 (Twin turbo V8) is spectacular.
Penguin
Also the last Top Gear magazine that I picked up had a long term test on the BMW 535dT (touring wagon), which they praised for it's power, performance, economy, and just about everything else. wuodabiero
I remember a South African road test of the 320i pitted against the 320tds ... and the latter comprehensively outperforming the former. I reckon we might need to brace ourselves for the prospect of being left standing by smoking Legacy GTDs of the future.
RippinRoo
BMW 535dT : 0-60 in 6.3s, 268bhp, 413 lb-ft torque, 35mpg So muscular is the 535d that BMWs standard manual gearbox would be turned to swarf by the torque of this engine "I love the feel of wind in my face and boobies against my back." - BMW motorcycle rider
S4
I saw a brand new Jetta TDI yesterday, and I heard the damned thing before I saw it. I don't know what was wrong with it, but it sounded like a truck. I've been by older TDIs though and haven't heard a thing.
tytek
VW TDI motors use pump injectors (pump duse) which are more noisy than the traditional/other diesels. the V10 TDI that is sold in the US in the Touareg = 308HP and 553lb/ft torque at 2000RPM! that thing is a monster. but the current king of the hill in diesels is the A8 4.2TDI - 326hp and 479ft/lb @ 1600rpm. allows it to reach 0-60 in 5.5 sec and provides just over 30mpg. in addition, audi is running a diesel R10TDI in le mans this year... and they already won the first race (less pit/gas stops). modern diesels are so quiet at idle that it is very difficult to know if a gas or diesel is under the hood. but once you experience the torque of a diesel you will never go back. any gear, any RPM, those things just pull (but they do lose steam up top) over 70% of new cars purchased in Austria (for example) are diesels - subaru needs to jump on that. toyota already has... The B4
My impression with a 2003 Jetta TDI was great low end... lackluster midrange. I do feel a diesel would solve two hurdles for the Tribeca... low end grunt and gas mileage. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
fzanetti
With gas prices over 3 USD a galon, Diesel and Diesel/hybrid cars would be really great to boost SOA sales once their mileage due to the AWD system really suck!!!! One major concern for the Tribeca is the really poor mpg on it, which they believe are really holding off sales.... Tommyh
Then we can go out and get cool license plate frames that say "You just got spanked by a diesel." Even better: "You just got spanked by a diesel stationwagon." Martin Luther - "Who loves not women, wine and song remains a fool his whole life long."
