Mike H
"Road and Track" road test results list the Legacy GT skidpad at 0.79 g. I have noted that a large number of other vehicles listed have higher results and many of those being less expensive cars (mustang gt, chev cobalt, honda accord coupe, jetta etc.). I had thought with the lower center of gravity - given the Flat-4 boxer engine & AWD etc. the subaru legacy should be a leader in its class for excellent handling. At least I thought it would come a little closer to the WRX STI at 0.88 g. Now I know other factors like suspension, weight and tires should be considered.......but given some of the competition listed I was surprised that the Legacy GT was losing to some of those cars. How bad would the skidpad results be if the Legacy had a standard engine and without AWD?? Can someone shed some light, I am sure I am missing something ??? john_knoxville
i may be wrong, but i think awd helps stabilize the car coming out of a corner, but not sure it offers much help going into one; chassis, body rigidity, tire width, and suspension prolly come more into play its also worth considering that there is usually a tradeoff being ride quality versus tight cornering ability

Jon in CT
Road & Track editors are idiots. If they want to rate cars on skidpad results, put the same f***ing tires on all the cars.
mach_six
This test is based on factory equipment and is valid way to test how a car will perform with that equipment. Maybe these shitty test results will open Subaru eyes to spend the extra money on better equipment instead of going cheap. Many people who drop $25k+ on a car aren't willing to upgrade the tires, brakes and whatever to make it perform the way it should. This is not a good start for them to attract buyers who wouldn't normally think of Subaru as a car to buy.
2006Specb122
I agree that you shouldn't put crappy tires on a nice car from the OEM. What is goign on? I've heard nothing but complaints about the RE92s. I guess I'm glad my car came with slightly different tires. I have the same road and track with the skidpad rating. In fact I just asked this question in another forum before I saw this one. I'm wondering the same thing. We have better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times than a porshe boxster but a VW beetle out handles us on the skidpad! ????? So does the mini cooper, chevy cobalt, and the honda accord.... we're basically in the bottom of the bucket when it comes to the skidpad results. I'm a little upset because that is one of my favorite specs. HOWEVER, I have the spec b.. different tires, different suspension, different rims, and from my testing thus far this is the nicest handling cars I've ever owned. I used to own a Saleen Mustang with a skidpad rating of .88 before I added some goodies to the suspension like subframes..... this spec b is in the same category.. .haven't had much experience with it to really put it to the test... ONE TRACK DAY would do it.. but like I said so far... this thing sticks to the road. Plus factor in the AWD and it doesn't compare to the stang.... In fact one day (when I was young and stupid) I took a corner at about 45mph to avoid an accident and out of the corner of my eye I saw lights flash. I took off ran through all the gears and was gone. A minute later I saw the same flashing coming from my rear view mirror. I didn't want a ticket so I thought I better try to outrun the police officer. It started raining and my back end began slipping. Needless to say I gave up and pulled over. Of course the cop approaced with gun drawn... (it was 2 am) I was lucky that night... That will never happen with the LGT... .not because I'd outrun a cop without the rear slipping but because I don't advocate speeding or breaking the law and I'll never try anything like that again.. That was when I was a young teenager and just like all young mustang owners I thought I was unstoppable. Now I'm much more educated...why do you think I drive a LGT.
