something ive never thought to ask: did you guys sand off the green crap from the backs of the gauges? or do these leds just over power the green?

The Bulbs themselves render the color, the factory bulbs are actually white with a little green rubber condom rolled over the end.

When you get the LED's make sure you get them as bright as possible and with the widest beam spread, this will help eliminate any dark areas.

Here's a pic of my dash after changing the instrument and HVAC lights. Thanks for the inspiration! I used a white LED in the lower position of the HVAC behind the temperature slider to show the red. Also just installed the new audio unit in there. Crutchfield said the double din Clarion wouldn't fit, but it went in perfect. Couldn't be happier with the results. Also did the light behind the Automatic Trans. Selector, and the map and dome with LED's. Had the car for a couple of months and it is coming together.

Well, o got it done. Lost a circlip, and I second disconnecting the temp control cable in the passenger footwell.

Cannot stand fiddly work, and I have big hands, so I found a way to get it open wider.

Remove these screws, and lift the tabs just in front.

Carefully pull it open, there is still a ribbon cable that connects the two halves.

In this picture, the heat control arm is removed.

I got it open about an inch.

Not a bad job. Looking forward to driving it tonight. Oh...if you lose a cir clip, and have to drive, the car works fine without the instrument cluster, but the blinkers do not. ;)

If your going red. I took my HVAC apart. Pull the little green condoms off the bulbs and colored the backs of the buttons with a red Sharpee. Super easy and works great. I did it with my stock radio too. I'll have pics up Monday of my finished interior i'll be sure to post up the lighting in here.

I took my whole control apart.. It's Not hard.. but be careful because stuff will pop out and fly..

Anyways i hope these LED's will last longer then my last.. but it might of been my alternator that killed my LED's in the HVAC controls and behind my gauges..

anyways here you go :)

only reason why I took it all apart because of the space and how I had to flip the LED's the other way around and it was just annoying because of the space.

Oh and that AC switch bulb is replaceable (dealer says it's not and no part #) mine was never blown but just so you know :)

What size are the hazard, fog, cruise, and defrost button lights?

it seems like a NEO3 should fit.. it's the same size as the replacement for the HVAC controls and I just took my hazard out to replace it with a bulb from a spare fog light switch but the bases from the switch and the HVAC are the same.

Hi,

Thanks for the really great write up. I was following it, along with the pictures, and I believe I have a suggestion for a correction.

Step 9 says, "Now flip over the Unit and undo the clips". Those words are correct, but the accompanying image is not.

The image shows, circled in red, two clips which go over the brown tabs on the edge of the circuit board. The two clips that should be circled are just to the outside of the two circled in the picture. The correct ones are black, and small, but show in the picture.

When the two black clips are released, the plastic piece to which they are attached can be pulled UP (not back), revealing the circuit board and the bases for the light bulbs.

Worked for me, YMMV.

Thanks again for the helpful write-up and great pictures.

BTW, like several others here, I also found it quite easy to release the heater cable from down by the passenger footwell, rather than from the back of the control unit.

Thanks heaps for this thread. I didn't even know mine had lights and it always irritated me.

My heating unit is a little different to the one pictured, perhaps because it's the Australian model where we call it a Liberty. I've just ordered new leds, so I'll post up the differences when they come in and i take it apart again.

Forgot to take photos, but just a note for prosperity that my heating unit only has two lights in the back. And the leds look great :)

Sounds like you've disconnected the heater cable from the rod that moves the vents. Have a look on the middle side of the passenger leg bay, tucked in right behind the dash center piece (the bit that has your radio in it) there will be a cable coming down from your heater that's clipped into place. It's easy to find, if you go behind any part of the dash you've missed it. The end of it will be a little metal doughnut. There's also a rod just around there that should be going through this loop. If this is your problem, put the rod through the little doughnut and problem solved.

I had the same problem, but it was hot air, it's why i found this entire site in the first place.

Thanks to this walk through I just replaced my hazard switch and climate control bulbs with LEDs.

Hazard switch -white

Cc- red, except lower bulb for temp slider with white

Looks great!

Are the cruise and rear defrost supposed to be backlit when the headlights are on? Or does just the green light come on when you turn them on?

Thanks again for a great walkthrough.... And def get extra Jesus clips!

Oh and the slider bulb is a pita to get to!
